📍Atlantic Canada SuperNOVA is a not-for-profit initiative of Dalhousie University that promotes science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM) to youth in Atlantic Canada. Based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, SuperNOVA offers engaging and innovative workshops, summer camps, clubs, and community events throughout Atlantic Canada that provide youth with rewarding experiences in STEM and nurture a life-long love of exploration, creativity, and academic achievement. As well as providing our youth engagement programs, SuperNOVA provides a wide variety of training to teachers and educators to improve STEM education across a variety of sectors. All SuperNOVA programs are designed to complement provincial learning outcomes and incorporate practices and policies recommended by provincial and national organizations with expertise in STEM outreach, youth development, and day camp management. With the support and guidance of Dalhousie University, Actua, and our supporters representing the private and public sectors, we are able to enhance our core programs with specialized outreach initiatives and services that ensure that youth, regardless of their geographic location, socio-economic situation, ability or gender, can be inspired and empowered through STEM.

What was that? đź‘€

An autonomous hydrogen fuel-cell airship, of course!

Hydrogen helps it float in the air and powers a fuel cell that makes electricity to run its motors - pretty cool!

Our ACES program is currently offering free, in-person classroom workshops for grades 9-12 and focuses on real-world applications of clean energy through interactive activities!

Registration for fall workshops is now open - learn more at the đź”— in our bio and sign up your class today!

And don’t forget to share with an educator who could benefit from these workshops 💙

Have you registered for the Mlkiknewawti fall land-camp? 🍂

At this 3-day, overnight program, Indigenous high school students will gain hands-on experience working with hides while building meaningful connections with their peers.

Participants will work with Luke Denny to learn about preparing and tanning deer hide, exploring the traditional process of making leather and its connections to STEM. Throughout the weekend, there will be opportunities to learn on the land, share experiences, and develop new skills. 🦌

Evenings will bring time to unwind with crafts, games, and campfires. 🔥

Our fall land-camp runs Friday, November 27 - Sunday, November 29 at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts and is open to Indigenous students in grades 9-12, and it’s free to attend. 🧡

Learn all the details at the link in our bio, and we’ll see you in November!

On Saturday, October 3, SuperNOVA’s Management team (from left to right: Caitlin, Alexandra, Maya, and Jarman) attended the Kjipuktuk Wije’winen Gala, hosted by the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre.

The gala is a celebration of Mi’kmaq culture, resilience, community leadership, and the work being done to support Indigenous families and communities across Mi’kma’ki.

“Wije’winen” means “come with us,” an invitation to partners, allies, and community members to walk alongside the Friendship Centre in supporting transformative programs and creating a stronger future together.

We were grateful to be part of such a meaningful evening and to celebrate the people, relationships, and community that make this work possible.

Wela’lioq (thank you) to the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre and everyone involved in bringing this special evening together. We had a wonderful time!

We're looking forward to our Big on STEM event tomorrow, thanks to the generous support of Cenovus and fun, hands-on facilitation by the team at SuperNOVA at Dalhousie University. STEM activities give youth the chance to explore, create and problem-solve while discovering new interests and imagining the possibilities for their future careers.

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

Today is a day to reflect on the legacies of the residential school system and to honour Survivors, the children who never returned home, their families, and their communities.

It is also a call to action for each of us to advance reconciliation in meaningful ways.

At SuperNOVA, we are committed to ensuring our programming is inclusive of Indigenous worldviews and values, and grounded in respectful and reciprocal relationships with the communities, Indigenous youth, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers who help shape it.

We deeply respect and value their guidance, which helps shape meaningful experiences for the youth who join us.

SuperNOVA is committed to advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, especially:

#63: Supporting the integration of Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods in education.

#92: Building respectful relationships and equitable opportunities with Indigenous communities in education and employment.

On this day, and every day, we reaffirm our responsibility to listen, to learn, and to act in ways that honour Indigenous voices and strengthen our shared path toward reconciliation.
