Nova Scotia is strongest when we invest in everyone. Yet recent provincial budget decisions have raised deep concern across communities in our province. Programs supporting Indigenous organizations, Black/African Nova Scotian communities, arts & culture, disability groups, and all forms of community-based social programs that support those already experiencing poverty and social marginalization have had their budgets reduced or completely destabilized. Organizations across our province continue to face uncertainty, hard decisions, and real-world impacts.

AccessNow NS stands in solidarity with the organizations and communities affected. These programs are essential social infrastructure that keep people and communities safe, connected, and supported.

September 26th is World Contraception Day.

Access to contraception is a right, not a luxury. Too many people in Canada can’t afford the high costs of contraception medication and devices like birth control pills, IUDs, implants, and the morning-after pill, leading to countless unplanned pregnancies.

A national drug plan that covers all Canadians, also known as pharmacare, could change this.

The federal government recently introduced legislation that covers contraception and diabetes medications and devices for all Canadians – free of charge. But some premiers are choosing to keep this option out of reach. They have threatened not to join the federal program when it’s rolled out.

Join us in urging our leaders to stop playing politics with people's health and get pharmacare across the finish line! You can support the fight for universal contraceptive coverage in Nova Scotia by joining

Birth control isn't just about family planning! For many, hormonal contraception can help with endometriosis and cycle regulation for those who menstruate. Some of our supporters recently spoke with Global News to talk about their experiences with birth control to help manage their endometriosis.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Access Now NS Celebrates Manitoba’s Historic Coverage for Universal No-Cost Prescription Contraception

Halifax, NS – August 23, 2024 – Access Now NS applauds the Government of Manitoba’s groundbreaking decision to offer free prescription contraception starting October 1, 2024. Manitoba will become the second Canadian province to implement this essential policy, following British Columbia's lead.

Announced by Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara, this initiative will cover the full cost of about 60 forms of prescription contraception, including pills, IUDs, and hormone injections. This move addresses significant financial barriers and supports reproductive health and equity across the province.

“We celebrate Manitoba’s commitment to reproductive justice, gender equity, and health promotion,” said Katie Rennie, Co-Chair of Access Now NS. “This is a major step forward in ensuring that all individuals have access to essential health care without financial strain. Because, as we know, low-barrier access to contraception is essential healthcare.”

Access Now NS is inspired by Manitoba’s progress and remains dedicated to advocating for similar changes in Nova Scotia. We encourage the public to support our mission by following us on social media and signing our petition to push for universal contraception access in Nova Scotia.
