✨ Congratulations to Sue Goyette, winner of the 2026 J.M. Abraham Atlantic Poetry Award for her book FUTURE HOWL (Gaspereau Press)!

The J.M. Abraham Atlantic Poetry Award (a $2,000 prize administered by the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia) is presented annually to an Atlantic author for a book of poetry. It was awarded last night at the Atlantic Book Awards gala at the Halifax Central Library.

Of the winning title, the jury said:

“Future Howl is a stunning meditation on trauma—both familial, and societal. Goyette’s collection transitions gracefully from one dichotomy to the next. Private agonies bleed into public denials while families can be as bloodthirsty as wolves. Natural scenes become escapist fantasy as the animal world viewed through a computer monitor is infinitely more comforting than the realities of genocide and climate change. After all, it is far easier to project human social dynamics onto the behaviours of animals than it is to interrogate the animosity embedded in human societies. Goyette boldly places humanity at the crossroads between the natural and unnatural worlds, then asks which is real. Where are the boundaries between authenticity and performance? Where do familial abuse and societal denial intersect? Where do they diverge? Goyette does not provide answers. Instead, the reader will find vivid imagery, wild feeling, and a maternal rage that is ancient and unyielding.”

✨ Congratulations to Lauren Soloy, winner of the 2026 Ann Connor Brimer Award for Atlantic Canadian Children’s Literature for her book THE NEWEST GNOME (Tundra Books)!

The Ann Connor Brimer Award for Atlantic Canadian Children’s Literature (a $5,000 prize administered by the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia) is presented annually to an Atlantic author for a book of fiction or non-fiction that was written for children. It was awarded last night at the Atlantic Book Awards gala at the Halifax Central Library.

Of the winning title, the jury said:

“The real joy of this book is the sheer joy of it! The Newest Gnome is an enchanting mix of fact and fantasy where a community of odd little beings revel in the natural world and invite readers to do so alongside them. We meet gnomes not quite like any we may have seen before.

There is a story here—a gnome named Grolly Maru arrives in The Pocket and is welcomed by all the other gnomes. But alongside the story, are transcendent moments of poetry, wordless graphic spreads, lovingly elucidated lists, and stunning text-over-art pages worthy of poster-sized wall prints.

The book itself strains to contain the loving depictions of curiosity, community and colloquy. There are lists: different kinds of animal eggs, spirals that appear in nature, and even things that can be worn as hats if you are small enough to sport a dandelion puff on your head. There is also a dessert recipe, a lullaby, and even gnome calisthenics.

Soloy has created a world all her own, and in introducing readers to the world of The Pocket she also has much to tell us about our own.”

✨ Congratulations to Jaime Burnet, winner of the 2026 Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award for her book, milktooth (Vagrant Press)!

The Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award (a $30,000 prize administered by the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia) is presented annually to an Atlantic author for a book of fiction. It was awarded last night at the Atlantic Book Awards gala at the Halifax Central Library.

Of the winning title, the jury said:

“Milktooth is a breathtaking account of the insidiousness of intimate partner abuse and the immense strength and difficult untangling required to escape. Jaime Burnet offers a complex and sensitive look into the unsafe domestic space where early-thirties protagonist Sorcha is trying to conceive via IVF with a controlling and manipulative partner, Chris. Set between Cape Breton and Scotland, the story unravels against a backdrop of beautiful scenery. The power of found and chosen family and the Q***r community shines through in a disturbing yet important story. Burnet has incredible skill, building momentum from the first page, and reaching a narrative climax that is extremely moving. Sorcha’s first steps toward freedom, despite her fear and doubt, are stunningly captured on the page.“

Huge congratulations to and !

Congratulations to Halina St. James, winner of the 2026 Evelyn Richardson Award for her book THE GOLDEN DAUGHTER (House of Anansi Press).

The Evelyn Richardson Non-Fiction Award (a $2,000 prize administered by the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia) is presented annually to a Nova Scotian author for a book of non-fiction. It was awarded last night at the Nova Scotia Book Awards gala at the Brightwood Golf & Country Club in Dartmouth.

Of the winning title, the Jury said:

“Slave. Ukrainian. They are not terms that have historically been linked together. However, with her pairing of the words in The Golden Daughter: My Mother’s Secret Past As A Ukrainian Slave Worker in N**i Germany, Halina St. James delivers a narrative both personal and universal in an era of perpetual political strife.

Written with unflinching courage, the author recounts the gripping story of her mother’s abduction from school in February 1943, during the N**i occupation of Ukraine. The then seventeen-year-old Maria Brik was later transported, via cattle car, to Germany where she was enslaved in a N**i labour camp.

St. James’s discovery of a hidden stash of Maria’s letters enabled her to understand the profound anguish that pervaded the life of her mother, who died in Halifax. As did the Oscar-winning film The Zone of Interest (2023), The Golden Daughter excavates horrors of the past to explore their enduring impact.”
