The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, Atlantic Region

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, Atlantic Region The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) is a voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancers.

We won’t stop until there’s a cure for all blood cancers, and we are able to improve the quality of life of people affected by blood cancers and their families by funding life-enhancing research and providing educational resources, services, and support. Since 1955, we have been a dynamic leading force focused on funding Canadian research and supporting patients as they go through their cancer jou

rney. Our mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. In 2015, we invested more than $7.3 million in research, programs and support services to improve the lives of Canadians affected by blood cancers. The funds invested provide:
• Life-saving blood cancer research to accelerate treatments, therapies and cures
• Free educational materials and events for patients and their families
• Local programs such as Family Support Groups and the First Connection Peer-to-Peer Support Program
• Comprehensive, personalized assistance through our Information Resource Center (IRC)
• Educational information sessions for healthcare professionals and non-patient groups

There will be more advancements in the next 20 years in cancer treatments than we have seen in the last 100 years combined. Our commitment to cutting-edge science has contributed to an unprecedented rise in survival rates for some people with blood cancers. The relative five-year survival rate for people with leukemia, for example, nearly quadrupled in the past 48 years. And Hodgkin lymphoma is now considered one of the most curable forms of cancer, thanks to radiation and chemotherapy. We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous generosity and support of our donors, volunteers, partners, and participants of our major fundraising campaigns, including Light The Night, Team In Training, and School & Youth, in helping us save lives not someday, but today!

On Saturday June 20th, we remember and honour the life of Lieutenant Joel Neily (Kentville, N.S.)
A devoted firefighter, family man, and friend who faced a courageous battle with lymphoma in the last couple of years.
The service was a beautiful and powerful tribute, with the entire Kentville community coming together to honour what a kind and loving person Joel set out to be. It was a moving reminder of the incredible impact Joel had on so many lives, and the deep respect he earned through his dedication, courage, and compassion.

As we reflect on Joel’s legacy, our Halifax team is committed to continuing that impact. This fall, we will be hosting a Community Light The Night Walk in Kentville, Nova Scotia (details to come) and we warmly invite everyone to join us. Together, we can carry Joel’s spirit forward and support Canadian families impacted by blood cancer.

One of Joel’s final wishes was to continue to support Light The Night through his community. If you are able, we encourage you to honour his legacy by contributing to his campaign and helping bring hope to others facing a similar journey.

Rest easy, Joel. Your light continues to guide us.

On behalf of all the members of our department, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who joined us today to honor and celebrate the life of our brother, Engineer 1st Class, Lieutenant Joel Neily.

The outpouring of support shown by fellow firefighters, first responders, friends and community members was both humbling and deeply appreciated. Seeing so many people stand alongside us was a powerful reminder of the impact Joel had on those around him and the respect he earned throughout his life.

To those who marched with us, attended the service, sent messages, shared memories, offered prayers, or simply kept Joel and his family in your thoughts—thank you. Your kindness and support have provided comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

Joel served with pride, dedication and commitment to helping others. While we mourn his loss, we are grateful for the opportunity to honor him in a manner befitting the remarkable firefighter, friend, husband, father, and man that he was.

The sound of the final alarm may have marked the end of Joel's watch, but his legacy will continue to live on in our department, our communities, and in the hearts of all who knew him.

Thank you all for helping us give our brother the farewell he so greatly deserved.

Rest easy, Joel. We have it from here.

This National Survivor Day, we are proud to shine a light on our 2026 Light The Night Honoured Hero, William Smith, age 8, from New Brunswick. 🤍

A survivor of B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, William’s journey began in 2023 when, just weeks into first grade, his family received the life-changing news no parent ever expects to hear: “Your child has cancer.”

Through treatments, hospital stays, and unimaginable challenges, William has faced every obstacle with incredible courage, resilience, and positivity beyond his years. His story is a powerful reminder that childhood cancer impacts the entire family and that hope, strength, and community support can carry families through even the darkest moments.

Today, we celebrate William and every survivor whose bravery inspires us all. ✨

Today on National Survivor Day, we honor every survivor whose courage has rewritten the meaning of strength.

Surviving is more than making it through...it’s showing up day after day with resilience, hope, and determination, even when the road is uncertain. Every story matters. Every voice matters. Every life touched by illness, trauma, or adversity deserves to be seen and supported.

We’ve come a long way. Advances in research, treatment, early detection, and care have changed outcomes and given more people the chance to live fuller, longer lives. Progress that once felt impossible is now saving lives every single day.

But our work is not finished.

At the same time, we hold space in our hearts for those we have lost to blood cancer and for the loved ones who continue to carry their memory forward. Their lives continue to inspire the urgency of this work.

Too many people still face barriers to diagnosis, treatment, mental health support, affordability, and equitable care. Too many families are still waiting for breakthroughs. Too many survivors continue fighting battles long after treatment ends.

Today, we celebrate survival but we also recommit ourselves to closing the gap. Through research, advocacy, compassion, and community, we can build a future where better outcomes are possible for everyone, everywhere.

To every survivor: your strength inspires more people than you know.
To every caregiver, researcher, advocate, and loved one: thank you for being part of the fight.

Today, we celebrate survival, honor every journey, and recommit ourselves to closing the gap through research, advocacy, compassion, and community.

Together, we continue moving toward a future with better outcomes for everyone. 💜
