Braved the snowstorm to go to the Nova Scotia budget release. Thankful that Joanne Hussey came with. My thoughts are here: https://www.policyalternatives.ca/.../ns-budget-2026.../
Their own analysis shows that their plan is not good for economic growth or revenue growth and yet they defend their plan for cuts that by year 4 will amount to a loss of 20% direct civil service jobs and 12% broader public sector jobs ( and a billion dollars). While they grow executive offices in many departments. While they found funding for for-profit child care expansion but not to make child care more affordable; and book $3 billion in public debt for long term care home loans for buildings Nova Scotians do not own? A levy on electric vehicles because we would not want fewer combustion engines (nothing for transit or bike lanes). More tax cuts for the rich. Instead of supporting current search and rescue and firefighters, millions going to the NS Guard? No actual real distributional analysis- which families, which communities will pay the costs and which will benefit exactly?!
