Our spring steward training wrapped up May 28-29 with our Cape Breton group taking on two days of learning.
Members were educated on the organizing process, identifying and filing grievances, communication with their employer and more.
With lots of hands on training, group work and one on one discussions, these stewards left with the confidence to represent their coworkers in important matters and the power of union organizing.
A big thank you to all who came out to participate!

UFCW Eastern Provinces Council would like to extend its gratitude to Local 864 member Matt Latter who recently wrapped up his duties with the SPUR program.
In his time as a SPUR, Matt took part in several 864 organizing campaigns including the multiple Aramark campaigns over the winter and spearheaded his own organizing drives with the help of 864 staff.
Reflecting on his time, Matt looks back fondly on bringing solidarity amongst new members and the knowledge he gained.
"Matt learned the ins and outs of what it takes to be a support staff all while popping onto front lines to support members from neighbouring locals," said national staff member Dikota Williams, who worked closely with Matt on several campaigns.
"His experience will have taken him from member to service person, giving him both perspectives of what it means to be a part of a union family."
We would like to graciously thank Matt for his time and wish him the best of luck as he returns to his local with his new knowledge gained.

UFCW Local 1252 members at Sunrise Animal Hospital have voted to ratify their first collective agreement, with 100 per cent participation from the membership throughout the process.
This milestone agreement delivers significant gains for workers and establishes important workplace protections and standards for the veterinary support staff who play a vital role in caring for animals and supporting clients every day.
The agreement includes wage increases of approximately 13 per cent over the life of the contract, with the majority gained in the first year. It also establishes clear wage scales and guaranteed annual progression, bringing greater transparency, fairness, and stability to the workplace.
In addition to wage improvements, current employees will receive a $1000 ratification bonus and secured important scheduling protections.
This includes schedules being posted 14 days in advance, as well as overtime protections and seniority rights related to layoffs, recalls, and job postings.
The agreement further strengthens workplace rights through paid holidays, improved vacation language, paid inclement weather closures for scheduled employees, progressive discipline protections, steward representation rights, and a formal grievance and arbitration procedure.
This first collective agreement represents an important step forward for staff and reflects the strength, solidarity, and determination of the membership throughout negotiations.
Thank you to the bargaining committee and all members for their professionalism, unity, and support in achieving this historic first agreement.

Curtis is a lead hand with the public works team and has been a member of staff for 12 years. He was onboard when staff certified with UFCW in January 2026.
Curtis has seen big improvements since their certification including full time hours, better wages, paid time off and increased overtime pay.
However, his favourite improvement is the safety of job security and the health benefits for he and his family.
In his free time, Curtis is passionate about attending his kids sporting events.

Our steward training continues across Atlantic Canada as numerous stewards from units across Newfoundland and Labrador gathered on May 13 and 14 in St. John's for their round of training.
Stewards gathered at the new Local 1252 office where staff gave lessons on being an effective workplace steward, identifying grievances and best practices in the workplace.
UFCW Eastern Provinces Council would like to extend our gratitude to all members who came out for training. Your union is most effective when you are educated and involved and your participation is what makes UFCW stronger.

UFCW Eastern Provinces Council Local 1252 members at the Town of Harbour Breton public works department recently signed a new three-year contract, retroactive to Jan. 1, 2026, bringing in money and additional quality of life improvements.
Wage gains will see all classification rise by $1 each year across the life of the agreement, as well as an additional $1 premium for each hour members work in a supervisory role.
Along with the base increase, premiums will help members earn more for taking on a greater responsibility, helping close the gap when working with the additional pressures of the role.
Bereavement time was also extended to four days for immediate family and three days for in-law siblings and grandparents.
The extension allows for members to take more paid time away from work when their families need them the most.
A big thank you goes out to the negotiating committee for sticking through negotiations, including George Drake, who can be seen above signing the agreement.
Join us in congratulating these members!

On April 27th and 28th, stewards from across P.E.I. took part in two days of training to better hone their skills as shop stewards.
As part of our ongoing training across Atlantic Canada in April and May, members trained valuable skills including identifying workplace conflicts and grievances, using their voice to stand up for their coworkers, best practices to handle conflicts and the ever lasting importance of organizing.
A big congratulations to all members who passed the training and will continue to use these skills to get the most out of their UFCW membership!
