Hello, this is Carmen! I am originally from Hong Kong. With the lovely, welcoming people and the beautiful ocean surrounding, Halifax became my new home in 2015. I’ve created this page to provide a platform to gather useful information about fabric mask making and various precautions to protect yourself, your family and the community. When I share information on my own Facebook account, it very easily sinks to the bottom due to the vast amount of information shared every day, so, I hope that this page can keep all of the information organized and provide a helpful platform for the community.

When I was in high school in Hong Kong, I went through SARS in 2003. The memory is still fresh along with the smell of the surgical masks that we had to wear every day when I went to school. I had to measure my body temperature every day and my mother deep cleaned every corner of our home with 1:99 bleach. While we went through SARS successfully, the process was hard. 17 years later, a stronger virus - COVID19- is now spreading around the world. Hong Kong had its first confirmed case in January and the number of cases up until now have stayed in the triple-digits, even with many locations close to China. I believe Hong Kong people learnt a huge lesson from SARS and applied what they learnt to COVID19 to keep the number low. I would like to share as much information as I can from my experiences and the information shared by my Hong Kong fellows.

I am also producing fabric masks to distribute to the community for free. (To support local, the fabric is bought from Patch Halifax, a local small business in Halifax). I also encourage others to make their own fabric masks and I will share the mask making information I have on this platform too. I know there is still a huge debate about mask-wearing in the west, but I believe that everyone is doing their best to protect ourselves and others. I hope you will respect the platform here.
