Freemasonry in Halifax: The Story of St. John’s Lodge No. 2 – Volume I: The Early Builders (1780–1880)
This significant work traces the origins, development, and enduring legacy of St. John’s Lodge No. 2, one of the oldest Masonic Lodges in Canada.
Drawing upon archival records, early Lodge minutes, historical maps, biographies, and Masonic documents, the book explores the history of the Lodge from its constitution in Halifax in 1780 through its first century of existence.
The volume highlights notable figures connected to Halifax and Nova Scotia history, including Erasmus James Philipps, Edward Cornwallis, John Albro, Richard John Uniacke, Sir John Moore, Alexander Keith, William Alexander Henry, and many others whose contributions left a lasting mark on the province.
Prepared in anticipation of the Lodge’s upcoming 250th Anniversary in 2030, this publication preserves an important chapter of our Masonic heritage and serves as a tribute to the early builders whose vision and dedication helped establish one of Atlantic Canada’s enduring fraternal institutions.
