RAISE was so nice, we're doing it twice.

Sask Girls United is excited to open applications for our second iteration of RAISE (Reach, Aspire, Inspire, Serve, Empower), which will run from September 2026 until April 2027.

This opportunity is aimed at girls and gender-diverse youth ages 14-18 looking for out-of-the-box leadership opportunities that may be hard to find, especially for those living in rural areas. Through fun and practical monthly learning sessions, RAISE provides transferable experience in communication and leadership skills, community engagement, and non-profit board governance.

The program also includes a mentorship component where successful applicants will be matched with a Saskatchewan-based leader for monthly chats + check-ins. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a cash scholarship of $250 and a certificate.

As part of this program, participants will be required to participate in virtual monthly programming (approx. 2 hours/month), a monthly mentorship meeting (1 hour/month), attend supplementary programs/meetings (1-2 hours/month), and at-home reflective work (1 hour/month).

Monthly learning sessions include topics such as:
- Effective communication
- Community building and involvement
- Mental health and stress tolerance
- Employability skills (resume writing, mock interviews)
- Leadership
- Board governance
- Reflective creative project

Spaces for this program are limited, with 10 spots available. Applicants should approach the form with thought and consideration, ready and excited to commit to the process.

Our Leadership 101 took place on Sunday, and we had a fantastic turnout! The participants really enjoyed learning about leadership and their own unique strengths. Josephina Hovdestad presented all about her leadership journey which was so inspiring. We also did an art activity where participants got to explore their own leadership traits and the passions that they have. Here are some of the results we've been given permission to share!

Our first RAISE program has come to an end, and as we celebrate our wonderful five participants, we also want to shed a spotlight on the mentorship element.

Aya and Aleida were one of the pairings - here's what they had to say about the experience!

Sharayah is a dedicated leader and community support worker for newcomer adults and youth within the South-Central region of Saskatchewan. She currently works at the Moose Jaw Multicultural Council, where she has passionately been involved with newcomer integration and cultural awareness initiatives. Her primary goal is to work toward inspiring a friendly and inclusive environment where everyone feels safe and welcome to fully participate. Meet our new Director of Indigenous Initiatives, Ashlyn!

Ashlyn was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but has lived mostly in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on Treaty 4 or Treaty 6 territory. She holds a BA in Linguistics and History from the University of Regina and is completing an MA in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Alberta. Throughout her education, Ashlyn has focused on Indigenous issues, emphasizing Indigenous languages in linguistics and colonial Canadian history. During her undergrad, she received awards for Indigenous leadership and academic success. Ashlyn is a Métis individual with traditional roots in the historic Red River community and Batoche, Saskatchewan. Professionally, Ashlyn has worked at institutions such as the University of Regina (U of R) and the Ministry of Parks, Culture, and Sport of the Government of Saskatchewan (PCS), focusing on Indigenous issues. Ashlyn is super excited to share her knowledge with SGU and to bring Indigenous perspectives to the next generation of leaders. In her spare time, Ashlyn can be caught reading, doing a puzzle, or working on a LEGO set alongside her cats.

We are so grateful to have Ashlyn join our board!
