News from Madagascar! Our program manager met the mayor of the Soanierana commune on July 2.
He explained to us, as did the associations we met during the day, that there had been no bush fires, although these usually start at the beginning of June. This is an unhoped-for result of the acceptance of the “dina” (rules), which were formulated with the participation of as many people as possible to protect the environment!
The RENIALA project is funded by the Quebec government as part of the International Climate Cooperation Program (PCCI), a program stemming from the Plan for a Green Economy 2030.

HAITI : SIX MONTHS OF VIOLENCE
Since the beginning of the year, the Haitian people have been facing one of the most serious crises in their history. They have had no respite from political instability and the violence of the armed gangs that have taken control of the capital. The gangs are accused of murder, r**e, looting and kidnapping for ransom.
Even as hopes mount that the situation will improve, more than 500,000 people remain displaced. In June, Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada approved over $180,000 in funding for four projects that will reach over 4,000 people and meet their most urgent needs.

"I was profoundly moved by the depth of the Christian witness to suffering, the lamentations and the prayerful hope for peace. These were expressed through song, storytelling, readings from the Scriptures, and collective prayer.
Some of the Church leaders present at the vigil had recently returned from Palestine. Others in the crowd were Palestinian Christians who had recently come from or were awaiting news of their families there. Hearing the stories of their journeys confronted us with the intolerable horror and humiliation faced daily by Palestinians".
Please take some time to read the article written by Kiegan Irish, Animator for Eastern and Northern Ontario about the in Ottawa.

SUDAN CRISIS: JOINT STATEMENT CALLS FOR MORE FUNDING AND ACCESS
The current crisis began a year ago today. Within a week of the start of the fighting, Pope Francis was inviting the faithful to pray for the Sudanese people, a call that Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada heeded with a Rosary for peace in Sudan on May 27, 2023.
In November 2023, the Holy Father addressed “a heartfelt appeal to local leaders to facilitate access to humanitarian aid and, with the contribution of the international community, to work in search of peaceful solutions.”
Now, the pontiff’s plea has been echoed in a joint statement issued by a group of civil society organizations, including Development and Peace - Caritas Canada, Caritas Africa CA, Caritas Internationalis, CAFOD, Catholic Relief Services and the Service jésuite des réfugiés - Jesuit Refugee Service / Canada.
Please take some time to read the statement:

Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada is intensifying its advocacy.
We resolutely call on Canada and the international community to deploy all necessary means to immediately bring about an internationally mediated peace process to provide a pathway to coexistence for Israeli and Palestinian people that respects the human rights, dignity and just aspirations of all.

A little throwback to THINKfast with the Manitoba Catholic Schools and Development and Peace at St. Maurice Parochial School! Over 35 students fasted for 24 hours, prayed and learned about the partners of Development and Peace - Caritas Canada in an interactive way to enhance their Lenten journey!
Students from St. Maurice School, St. Boniface Diocesan High School, St. Mary's Academy and St. Paul's High School participated in this faith and fun-filled day. Special guests included our very own president, Brenda Arakaza, who spoke to students about her journey with Development and Peace!
Students celebrated the end of the fast with the faithful of St. Vital Parish, celebrated by Fr. Wayne Morrissey, Parish priest and concelebrated with Fr. Charles Fillion, vicar-general of the Archdiocese of St. Boniface.
Let us continue to pray for our young people to be beacons of the light of Christ to the world!
