Shark and Ray Conservation Centre

Shark and Ray Conservation Centre ShARCC may conduct research and conservation projects on species other than elasmobranchs in alliance with aim 9 (Maintaining healthy, functional ecosystems).

ShARCC’s goal is to conduct and promote elasmobranch (sharks, skates and rays) conservation and research, assisting in recovery and preventing species extinction. Sharks and Ray Conservation Centre (ShARCC) aims to build a coalition of academia, industry, local communities, governmental and non-governmental organizations. With this combined action alliance, partnered with the research, conservatio

n and education projects carried out by ShARCC, the goal is to develop comprehensive, long-term and effective science based protection measures resulting in recovering or maintaining healthy populations for Atlantic elasmobranch populations through scientific research, education, governmental and community-based conservation projects. ShARCC particularly focuses in science, conservation and educational projects that aid in:

1) Localizing important habitat areas and hot spots
2) Localizing candidate areas for marine reserves or shark sanctuaries in the Atlantic
3) Making assessments available for more species
4) Providing independent scientific advice and evaluation of stock status, restoration, assessments, quotas and population trends
5) Providing advice on sustainable science based catch limits and fisheries
6) Improving the scientific knowledge of the biology, ecology, conservation and management opportunities of elasmobranchs
7) Cooperating with and educating and training of locals and their communities
8) Halting overfishing and illegal fishing
9) Maintaining healthy, functional ecosystems

ShARCC strives to promote and utilize only non-lethal catch and research methods along with being as minimally invasive as possible.

Our Story

Sharks of the Atlantic Research and Conservation Centre (ShARCC) was founded in 2016. As a research-centric NGO ShARCC conducts research and projects that foster science-based conservation of elasmobranchs (sharks, rays and skates). Our holy grail at ShARCC is to prevent species extinction and restore populations to healthy levels. To achieve this we are working in close collaboration with academia, industry, governmental and non-governmental organizations, paired with educational and outreach projects.

Currently ShARCC focuses on research, conservation and educational projects that aid in:

  • Localizing important habitat areas and hotspots

  • Localizing candidate areas for marine reserves or shark sanctuaries in the Atlantic
