An Important FYI:

CanCon CRTC Decision Info Session
Date & Time: Mar 23, 2026 03:30 PM Vancouver/ 7:30 PM Atlantic
Webinar ID: 998 1563 9401
Description:
We have reached a critical stage of the CRTC’s implementation of Canada’s new online streaming legislation – the Online Streaming Act (also known as Bill C-11) - that will affect our entire industry.

Last November, Canada’s media regulator released a new definition of Canadian content and is expected to issue a major decision in the coming weeks on financial support for Canadian programming by broadcasters and streamers. The CRTC’s November decision defines which productions will be recognized as Canadian. It also updates the job categories in the CRTC’s key creative scale for Canadian program certification.

During this session, we will provide practical guidance on how you can participate during the next phase of the implementation of the Online Streaming Act. We will also answer any questions you may have on these important issues.

A MESSAGE FROM THE NS ARTS COALITION:

WHAT’S NEXT?

We are working with all opposition MLAs to get your letters tabled in the house along with the petitions collected across the province. This means that your concerns will now be part of the official record of this time.

We continue to fight against this budget.

We now have 2 important asks:

1. Please join us in person on Tuesday, March 10 at noon at Province House.

We are calling for everyone concerned about the proposed budget to join together to demand a new budget. We need as many people as possible to come out and show the government that Nova Scotia is united in our demand that they do the work to create a budget that works for the people of Nova Scotia.

Tuesday March 10th at NOON at Province House
Rally for a New Budget Now (1726 Hollis Street, K’jipuktuk/Halifax).

Find out more here: nsarts.ca and share the attached graphic!

Bring someone else in! Can you carpool to the rally with friends, and/or commit to talking directly with at least 2 people – a colleague, a neighbour, an acquaintance – over the next few days? What are their concerns, and how do they see the budget impact them? Would they join us in person, or by writing a letter?

2. Please call your MLA and ask, respectfully, that they vote against the budget. You can find your MLA here.

We are working hard to ask our representatives to stand up for their constituents and their communities by making a new budget that reflects our concerns. It isn’t too late.

Wondering what else you can do?

Check out our advocacy toolkit.
Check out the NS Federation of Labour’s online letter writing campaign to add your voice again
Sign up to speak on the Financial Measures Act, Bill 198. Call: 902-424-8941 or email [email protected] and request to register to speak.
With so much gratitude for your voice and your support. It means the world.

THE FILM CREW EXCELLENCE AWARD – 2026 ENTRIES ARE OPEN!

This award, now in its 14th year, was developed in partnership with the local unions and guilds and recognizes the outstanding work happening behind the camera in Nova Scotia’s screen industry. The professionalism, innovation, and ingenuity of the crews in Nova Scotia are a major contributor to the province’s film industry, and this award honours their contribution in maintaining Nova Scotia as one of Canada’s premier film destinations.

The Film Crew Excellence Award will recognize an individual crew person or team for outstanding creative enterprise within Nova Scotia’s screen-based industry. The 2025 award went to set designer Tom Anthes, who started his career with CBC in 1967. For the past 32 seasons, Tom was the set designer for the award-winning sketch comedy series This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Over the course of 850 episodes, he designed 2000+ sets, from kitchens to bunkers, castles to cabins, and submarines to news desks.

Nominations for the 2026 Film Crew Excellence Award should include:
The name(s), position(s) and contact information for the nominee(s). Nominees do not need to be union members.
A description of their use of innovation and commitment to the Nova Scotia screen industry.
Supporting documents can be provided for jury review. Ideally, we would love to receive visual elements such as video clips and photos.
Please note that all nominations will be confidential and only the winner will be announced live at the awards gala (nominees will not be announced). This will better allow for talented crew members to be nominated for jury review year-over-year.

Submissions: Nominations can be submitted via email to [email protected]. All nominations will be reviewed and deliberated by an independent jury of industry professionals. The deadline for nominations is March 4, 2026.
