Our walk schedule is now live on our website! We have an exciting slate of walks with so many fun options to choose from over the weekend… and a few more yet to be announced!

We are so grateful for our knowledgeable and incredible walk leaders for sharing their time and energy! And we are grateful for you - yes you! - for planning to come and participate in a walk in your neighbourhood 😊

Check out all the details on our website (linked in our profile). We will be highlighting all the walks on here in the coming days, and look out for our posters and brochures around town.

Reminder of this event

Located on unceded and unsurrended Mi’kmaq territory, Nova Scotia is home to at least 52 historic Black communities. People of African descent have been present in this region for over 400 years, and our rich history is Nova Scotia’s history. Camp Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for many African Nova Scotians who have had a significant impact on the history of the region, including activists, military personnel, and those whose lives and deaths spurred social change both locally and across the nation.

This weekend, you can find us at the Camp Hill Cemetery for a free walking tour exploring these stories as part of the Jane's Walk * Halifax festival. We’ll be meeting at the Summer Street entrance at 11am on Saturday, May 3rd. All are welcome!

The Carlton St entrance to the Cemetery has been blocked by the construction of Killam Properties' Tower for some time now. It is not being kept in a respectful state. Please complain to HRM by writing to the clerk's office: [email protected].

Sign the petition and write into City Hall, [email protected]. SAVE THE LAST OF OUR BUILT HERITAGE!

We are about to pass 300 signatures after less than 24 hours! Please help spread the word so we can make it to 500 by tomorrow.

The Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia is horrified to hear about the application for demolition of 1717 Brunswick Street, formerly the Halifax Alehouse. Please sign the petition linked below to call on the municipal and provincial governments to take immediate action to stop the demolition, strengthen protections for built heritage in the HRM, and create more incentives to preserve the historic fabric of our city.

We also encourage you to write to Mayor Fillmore, the HRM Council, and Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage, Dave Ritcey, to say: enough is enough. We demand better protection for our built heritage before it is all gone!

You can find the contact information for your councillor and the Mayor's office here: https://www.halifax.ca/city-hall/districts-councillors/district-look
David Ritcey’s email address is: [email protected]

There's a great new blog post sharing the story of "the Caretakers Cottage" an often overlooked building in Halifax but one with an amazing story. Sadly the building is due to be torn down soon.

Learn its story here.

Camp Hill Cemetery is a site I worked to get registered.

For many years, I have worked with local communities and governments to register historic places in HRM as official heritage sites. Here are just a few I have helped to preserve and protect for future generations. Please see my website for a list of more.

While fence work proceeds apace on the Veterans Lane side, a lovely retaining wall is also taking shape. The Friends of the Public Gardens, meanwhile, are cataloging all trees in the cemetery and assessing the condition of every headstone.
