Meet our September Spotlight Arts Organization! Those Other Movies (TOM) is a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization providing year-round quality cinema programming in Haliburton County. The group came together 20 years ago through the efforts of longstanding organizer Tammy Rea and other volunteers to fill the gap in thoughtful and accessible cinema in the region. For this Spotlight, committee member Myra Stephen spoke with us about TOM’s work, and all that you can look forward to in the coming months.

September is a beautiful time to paint outdoors in Haliburton County. The light shifts, the woods begin to change, and familiar places suddenly offer something new to notice.

This week's prompts:

Tuesday - Forest Bathe: slow down and notice the dappled light on the forest floor. Any forest will do... we recommend Haliburton's Scupture Forest!

Friday - Paint the Bridge: make a memory of the iconic footbridge over the Drag River at Head Lake Park (you can see it from Rails End Gallery and Arts Centre)

Sunday - Start Small: try a few quick thumbnail sketches before committing to your next composition.

No masterpiece expected. Take a sketchbook, a few paints, or whatever you like to work with and simply get outside and look.

Challenge yourself.

And if something wonderful happens on the page or canvas, consider entering En Plein Air Haliburton.
Entry deadline: September 15.

The Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands would like to extend a big thank you to The Kennisis Lake Cottage Owners’ Association and Art on the Dock 2026, who donated $6966 to our Artists in the Schools & Community Program. Over the years, this event and the Kennisis Lake Community has donated over $40,000, helping to ensure opportunities for the children of Haliburton County to access Arts Education. Their ongoing support of this program has been critical to the Arts Council's program which strives to provide quality, varied arts programs to children, youth and seniors in Haliburton County while providing artists with training and employment opportunities. Thank you Art on the Dock and Kennisis Lake Cottage Owners' Association.
