What does a rewarding veterinary career look like in rural Ontario?

For Doug Veldhuisen, it means working with farmers, livestock and a community he’s proud to call home.

After graduating from veterinary college in 2020, Doug began practicing as a mixed animal veterinarian in northern Ontario. Today, he enjoys the variety of rural practice – including large animal reproduction – while providing an important service to the agricultural community in the Rainy River District.

The Veterinary Incentive Program has helped support Doug in continuing his career in an underserviced area of northern Ontario.

His story highlights the importance of attracting and retaining veterinarians in rural communities – and the difference that targeted support can make.

📣AAC Member Spotlight: Ontario Apple Growers

Fall in Ontario means apple season! So there's no better time to highlight the work of Ontario Apple Growers (OAG), a valued AAC member representing the province's apple producers.

Formed in the mid-2000s, OAG represents approximately 200 grower-members across Ontario's apple-growing regions — any grower with 10+ acres of orchard is part of this thriving community.

OAG serves growers by:

🍎 Promoting Ontario Apples — Building consumer preference for locally grown apples through social media campaigns, TV outreach, and partnerships with retailers featuring fresh apple displays in communities across the province

🪜 Advocating for Growers — Working to maintain access to crop protection tools and ensure growers have a reliable, qualified workforce

💡 Supporting Innovation — Connecting growers with research funding programs that drive new apple varieties and keep Ontario competitive with other growing regions

OAG cultivates a resilient, sustainable apple industry so consumers can keep enjoying fresh, locally grown Ontario apples — the first pick for healthy eating.

Let’s raise a glass to an organization truly rooted in Ontario! 🍇🍷

Grape Growers of Ontario (GGO) represents over 475 farm families and independent growers with processing grapes on more than 18,000 acres of vineyards—primarily in the three Designated Viticulture Areas of Ontario: the Niagara Peninsula, Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County, along with emerging regions such as Ottawa, Norfolk and Simcoe.

Since 1947 GGO has served as the voice and authority for Ontario’s passionate and hard-working growers. They support research and policy to support growers and collaborate with industry partners and government in order to build a strong and sustainable future for Ontario’s grape and w**e industry. This includes looking ahead to nurture the next generation of growers and advance sustainable practices for grape production.
