Victim Services Wellington Victim Services provides support to victims of crime and tragic circumstance in Guelph Wellington. Anyone can be a victim.

It is in times of trauma that victims need compassion, support and assistance most. Whether an accident has occurred, a crime committed, or a loss suffered, Victim Services Wellington (VSW) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round to support victims. VSW volunteers are trained extensively to help meet the short-term needs of victims. They are backed with widespread knowledge and experience in communication, crisis intervention, traumatic stress and victims' issues. We bring a knowledgeable and reassuring presence to what can be highly emotional, stressful and overwhelming circumstances.

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day, and we would like to take a moment to acknowledge and honour the little ones who were taken too soon. We would also like to honour those who have suffered the loss of a loved one in such a way, recognizing the incredible amount of strength it takes to navigate this grief. A prepared home is a safe home. This week, Victim Services Wellington urges you to take some time to practice Fire Safety in your homes. Having a plan in case of a fire is essential for everybody. We encourage you to regularly maintain your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, have a location to meet outside if there is a fire, and have everyone in your home know how to dial 911 for emergency purposes. Take a few moments today to review your fire safety plan with your loved ones. Remember, being prepared can make all the difference when every second counts.

Indigenous women make up approximately 5% of Canada’s population, yet account for 16% of women who are reported missing or are victims of homicide. This disparity is the horrible outcome of decades of persistent racism, sexism, and hatred towards Indigenous women across Canada. October 4th we honour the lives lost and continue to be hopeful for safe returning of those who have been missing. The fight for a safer, better Canada continues and justice for these women and Two-Spirited people will be supported.

Today we recognize the importance of working towards su***de prevention. When you can, encourage conversations and break the stigma surrounding mental health by showing your support. Having even a small, simple conversation with a family member or friend can be meaningful to that person. A small impact of any kind is still important and can make someone feel valued and supported. Talking about mental health is not easy for everyone, but having a community to lean on can be incredibly helpful.

DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH!

We are looking for individuals who receive inbound calls from Emergency services and will be responsible for dispatching calls out to our current direct service volunteers. This role is done completely remotely. You must have access to your own computer and cell phone. All necessary training will be provided as well as partnership with experienced dispatchers during your shifts. Must be available/willing to be on call evenings, overnights, and weekends. Must sign up for one shift block per month.

Expectations when on call include: Ability to answer phone, record all information provided and relay accurately to volunteers and provide any support/assistance needed while they are on scene. Reporting information to VSW staff.

This role does not include direct service of victims. Minimum of 1 year commitment required, and applicants must be minimum 20 years of age.
