Birth Trauma Awareness Week reminds us that two things can be true at the same time.; you can be deeply grateful your baby is here, and still grieve the birth you deserved.

We don't talk enough about how birth trauma can affect breastfeeding.

Sometimes it's hard to trust your body after a birth that left you feeling scared, unheard, or out of control. Sometimes feeding your baby brings back memories you weren't expecting. Sometimes you're trying to learn something new while carrying an experience you haven't had the chance to process.

One of the things we've learned at La Leche League Canada is that a conversation about breastfeeding is often about so much more than breastfeeding.

Sometimes it starts with, "My baby won't latch." Then a few minutes later, "Can I tell you what happened?"

And in that moment, what they often need isn't another feeding tip, they need someone to listen.

Sometimes the most healing words are simply, "I'm so sorry that happened to you."

You don't have to choose between gratitude and grief. There is room for both. There is room to celebrate your baby and acknowledge that your birth mattered too.

If your birth story is affecting your breastfeeding journey, or you simply need someone to listen, our trained volunteer Leaders are here and are honoured to hold that space with you.

Because when we support the mother, we support the breastfeeding relationship, too.

Happy World Chocolate Day!

One of the questions we hear from breastfeeding parents is, "Do I have to give up chocolate?"

Thankfully, for most, the answer is no.

Most breastfeeding mothers can enjoy chocolate while breastfeeding without any negative impact on their baby.

Every family is unique, so if you ever have questions about your diet while breastfeeding, we're here to help.
