Partner Spotlight: SHSM

Have you heard of the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)?
It's an Ontario Ministry of Education program that allows students to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma while focusing their learning on a specific economic sector; gaining valuable industry certifications and on-the-job experience along the way.

CEC's virtual workplace co-op programs, like Media Lab and Develop the Future, give students hands-on experience and certifications that can support SHSM requirements, all while exploring fields like digital media, graphic design, and app development.

Program Spotlight: Develop the Future

Develop the Future is one of CEC's virtual workplace co-op programs, giving high school students the opportunity to learn alongside industry experts as they prototype and pitch an app of their own creation.

As part of the program design, students are introduced to the Swift programming language in Xcode, learn about inclusive app design and accessibility features, take part in workshops to build their brand and presentation skills, and ultimately prototype and pitch their own app idea.

Visit careereducationcouncil.ca/developthefuture to learn more about Develop the Future and how your student can get involved.

Testimonial Tuesday

"The Develop the Future Program gave great insight through breaking down the foundations of Swift programming and allowed students to learn concepts whilst being able to creatively develop their own apps. It allowed students to work on crucial skills in the real world such as time management, problem solving and even teamwork through extensive collaboration. Overall, it gave me a good perspective on what being an app developer may look like and a solid foundation with being introduced to Swift."
