USE OF PEACOCK STIRRUPS IN CanTRA ACCREDITED PROGRAMS
«Le message français suivra»

To all CanTRA instructors, mentors and coaches,

«You have recently been reminded by Equestrian Canada of the rule change to Section G202.13 and G10005.5 concerning the use of traditional peacock safety stirrups at all competitions, effective January 1, 2026.

As you all know, the use of peacock stirrups in CanTRA Accredited programs has been an established practice for a long time. This kind of stirrup is also part of the adaptive equipment noted in the CanTRA Manual.

Considering EC’s recent policy review on the usage of Peacock stirrups, CanTRA is presently reviewing its practice to that effect in order to come up with a policy on its usage.

Until such time as this CanTRA policy is established, CanTRA is not here suggesting the end of using peacock stirrups but for CanTRA Instructors to be fully aware of the risks and to ensure that all dismounting is carefully supervised, with the stirrup leather and iron placed across the withers in front of the pommel. CanTRA also recommends that these stirrups are not used by independent riders to avoid incidents not associated with dismounting .»
