78 Years Since the Assassination of the First UN Mediator in Palestine: A Lesson in Impunity.
🕊️ On September 17, 1948, Folke Bernadotte, a Swedish diplomat and the first official UN mediator in Palestine, was assassinated in Jerusalem. He represented the United Nations, not Sweden.
🇸🇪 In Sweden, he is a national hero: with the Red Cross and the “White Buses,” he rescued more than 15,000 people from N**i camps, thousands of them Jewish. Resolution 186 (S-2) appointed him in May 1948, as the Mandate ended and Israel declared independence (United Nations, 1948a).
🏚️ He arrived in the midst of the Nakba: some 750,000 Palestinians expelled or fled and more than 500 villages destroyed or emptied in order to change the country’s demographics (Pappé, 2006; Morris, 2004).
⚖️ It was not a duel between equals. Haganah, Irgun and Lehi — Zionist Jewish militias — were armed and coordinated. The Palestinians were not. The dispossession of land and population was already underway (Shlaim, 2000).
🕊️ He achieved two truces and two plans. A/648, of September 16, called for coexistence; recognition of Israel de facto; negotiated borders; territorial coherence for both; the return of refugees with compensation; an international Jerusalem; and guarantees of rights (United Nations, 1948b).
🗺️ Specifically: an Arab Negev, a Jewish Western Galilee, Jerusalem under the UN with local autonomy, Haifa and Lydda open to both peoples, and the Palestinian return “at the earliest practicable date” under UN supervision (United Nations, 1948b; Economic Cooperation Foundation, n.d.). That returned land and the right to return.
🎯 That is why they killed him. Lehi, a clandestine Zionist Jewish group, saw the return, an international Jerusalem and an Arab Negev as an obstacle to a maximum Jewish state, without refugees and in control of the city. They branded him a British agent. The Lehi Zionists assassinated him before there could be a formal debate on the plan and thus aborted the UN mediation (Marton, 1994; Persson, 1979; Shlaim, 2000).
🔫 In Katamon, four Lehi men dressed as Israeli soldiers fired on the UN convoy. Yehoshua Zettler planned it. The leadership approved it: Yitzhak Shamir (later Mossad chief, foreign minister and prime minister, 1983-84 and 1986-92), Nathan Yellin-Mor (later a member of parliament) and Yisrael Eldad (Marton, 1994; Persson, 1979).
🚔 Israel condemned it publicly and dissolved Lehi. It did not secure the scene, ignored witnesses and prosecuted no one for the homicide. According to Burén (2013), based on Swedish archives, there had been prior threats and he was not protected. In 1950 Sweden called the investigation “inferior.” State impunity.
⚔️ The crime was not an isolated excess. Irgun (Menachem Begin, prime minister 1977-83), Lehi and Haganah used attacks and expulsions: King David (1946), Deir Yassin (1948). Plan Dalet contemplated destroying “resistant” villages and occupying them; Morris and Pappé document that destruction and the mass displacement, with different interpretations (Pappé, 2006; Morris, 2004; Shlaim, 2000). These militias became the IDF and their leaders entered government.
📜 They did not kill him for being “biased.” They killed him over the return — later Resolution 194 (III), December 11, 1948 — over a partition that did not hand everything to Israel, and for protecting civilians (United Nations, 1948c).
🕯️ Almost 78 years later: a UN envoy assassinated by a Jewish militia whose leaders went on to govern Israel, with not a single person convicted of the crime.
