The Society of Scribes & Illuminators
As another Welsh treat to continue our celebrations of St David’s Day, here is a piece by the late Ieuan Rees – calligrapher, lettercarver and very proud Welshman whose first language was Welsh. His output was prodigious and included pieces for inclusion in the Senedd and Millennium Centre (as well as the titles for the Vicar of Dibley!).

The Graceful Envelope 2026 Theme: Great Beginnings
Postmark Deadline: Tuesday, March 31, 2026

If you haven't entered yet, there's still a chance to get creative and decorate an envelope! Enter the Washington Calligraphers Guild’s annual contest, The Graceful Envelope. This year’s theme is “Great Beginnings”. It also marks two anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Washington Calligraphers Guild and the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. For returning participants, please note that the 2026 Graceful Envelope Contest has a New Theme and New Rules: Place your Entry Envelope inside a Carrier Envelope.
Entries must be postmarked by no later than March 31, 2026. Judging will take place this summer by three professionals from the calligraphic and arts communities. For inspiration, visit their past themes and winners page, where you will see previous entries, along with some winning envelopes from our very own guild members.
For complete information, please visit the Washington Calligraphers Guild website.

RCCG members mark February 11 and March 11th on your calendar for our next two Zoom enrichment sessions with Julie Wildman.
Over the next two months Julie will lead us through her Continuous Line Letter & Words Workshop.
Julie describes the sessions as follow:
From ancient cave painters to Picasso, Calder and Klee, artists have long even interested in what happens when a line is drawn continuously without lifts.
But what can the calligrapher do with a continuous line? Plenty?
In these sessions we will look at other artists’ interpretations of this technique and see how their process can be applied to letters and words. By exploring the continuous line, new ways to make and connect letters will be discovered, resulting in fresh ways to enhance your calligraphy.

The bad news is the two sessions are only open to RCCG members, the good news is that membership is just $30 CAD! For more information contact [email protected]
