We had a full house tonight as we approach a new calligraphic year with enthusiasm. Roberta cheerfully led us in Carolingian lettering. Karen made everyone a hand-made box with our yearlong project in it, in small packages. As we finish each project, we get to open the corresponding envelope and are gifted with a surprise inside. How ingenious and talented Karen is! We also showed our first prompt challenge - an accordion book with the alphabet written in it.

Welcome to our new members!

Few medieval manuscripts capture the imagination quite like the Luttrell Psalter.

Created between 1325 and 1340 for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell of Lincolnshire, it is celebrated not only for its beautifully executed Gothic script but also for its extraordinary illuminations. Alongside elegant initials and richly gilded decoration, the pages teem with lively scenes of medieval life - farmers harvesting crops, musicians, fantastic beasts, and wonderfully mischievous marginal creatures that continue to delight viewers nearly 700 years later.

Take a closer look on the digitised version on the British Library website, and you'll notice how the decorated initials lead the eye through the text, while the margins become a place for imagination to flourish. It's a reminder that even within the discipline of formal lettering, there is always room for creativity.
