Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC)

Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC) This initial group was made up of families and teachers from the Suzuki String School of Guelph which was looking for a new permanent home.

Founded in 1992, the Guelph Youth Music Centre is a unique facility that educates, enriches and fosters the development of our youth through music and the arts. The idea of the Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC) began over 30 years ago when a group of community-minded individuals saw a need for a permanent facility in which Guelph youth could participate in music and arts activities. After many year

s of fundraising, the SSSG saw the need for a larger, community vision. In 1985, the GYMC was formed and was given all funds raised by the SSSG. In 1992, the former Heritage Seed Company, an historic post and beam building along the Speed river, was purchased by the City of Guelph and turned over to the GYMC under a long-term lease. The centre opened in September 2001, following an extensive renovation that relied on more than 30,000 hours of labour and service from more than 100 volunteers. The Centre was an immediate success, providing a forum for affordable leadership, teaching, rehearsal and performance for hundreds of local music and arts students. The Centre includes a beautiful 180-seat Recital Hall, a dance studio and 15 rehearsal and teaching studios.

🎻 Congratulations to Coco Zhu and her teacher, Margaret Zak!

At just nine years old, Coco is already approaching music with remarkable focus, joy and determination. She studies both violin and piano with Margaret at the Guelph Youth Music Centre and recently earned first place and Best in Class at the Ontario Music Festivals Association provincial finals.

As Coco told GuelphToday: “I’m dead serious for my music.”

We are incredibly proud of Coco’s hard work, talent and love of performing, and grateful to Margaret for her dedicated teaching, encouragement and mentorship.

What a wonderful achievement for both student and teacher!

We would like to wish Matthew Gartshore all the very best as he moves on from his role at the GYMC and begins an exciting new chapter. Matthew has been a piano teacher with us since 2018, and it’s hard to fully express how much he has meant to the GYMC and the Guelph School of Music. He has been an incredibly dedicated, thoughtful, and inspiring teacher to so many students over the years, and we are deeply grateful for his care and musicianship! He will be greatly missed, and we wish him all the very best!

⭐ Matthew's student, Aarika, won 1st Place at the OMFA Virtual Provincial Finals for Classical Piano (Level 1 - Group C). Congratulations, Aarika! 🎹
