We all know that pollinators play an important role in the health of our ecosystems, but they can often be overlooked. So many of the fruits and vegetables we eat as well as countless other plants rely on bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects to survive.

At IJC, we have partnered with Pollination Guelph to create a wonderful habitat catered specifically to pollinating insets. It's just one way we help support biodiversity on the land and it's a beautiful one! Maintaining the garden is a job that takes many hands, and we are so grateful to the staff and volunteers that keep this space in bloom year after year.

If you're interested in coming to learn about the pollinator garden and lend some hands to help care for the space, we are gathering tomorrow morning at 9am. We'll learn together about local ecosystems and plant biology while cleaning up the space and doing an inventory of the species that are growing in the space.

Please take a moment to register for the event at https://www.ignatiusguelph.ca/pollinator-garden

Now that your seeds and seedlings are in the ground, what comes next?

Join us for our first Community Garden Meet-Up of the season on June 16 from 5:30–6:30 p.m.

As the growing season gets underway, questions inevitably start to pop up. Are your plants growing as expected? How much should you be watering? What's eating your leaves? Is it time to thin, w**d, or harvest?

These casual gatherings are a chance to get answers, learn practical tips, and connect with fellow gardeners. Whether you're looking for advice, troubleshooting a problem, or simply curious about what's happening in other plots, you'll leave with new ideas and greater confidence in your garden. Farm staff will be on hand to answer questions.

Bring your questions and join us for an evening of learning, sharing, and growing together. No registration required. Open to all community garden members.

You're invited to our next IJC Gathering on Sunday, June 22!

These gatherings are a chance to connect with others in the Ignatius Jesuit Centre community, hear updates on what's happening across the property, share a potluck meal, and spend time together on the land.

We'll be meeting at St. Brigid's Villa from 5-7pm. Bring your favourite dish to share. Whether you're a volunteer, gardener, donor, program participant, partner, or simply interested in the work taking place here, we'd love to see you there.

SAT JUN 6 @ 1-3 PM

This on farm workshop explores how to design productive growing spaces that function as living ecosystems. Drawing from Eramosa Herbals’ diverse on-farm planting of over 80 species, including medicinal herbs, native perennials, dye plants, and more, we’ll look at how biodiversity can be intentionally integrated into both market gardens and backyard plots.

This on farm workshop will be led by Dani Hagel of Eramosa Herbals and offered in partnership with Ignatius Farm.

Earlier in the day, participants have the opportunity to join us for a morning tour of the Ignatius Farm Small Plot Agriculture program.

The first Community Care Box of the season is almost here!

Across the garden, vegetables are growing well and the season is beginning to take shape. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, seeds have been planted, beds have been tended, and fresh local food is making its way from the soil to the harvest basket.

Community Care Boxes are available week by week from June 11 through October 22, with each box reflecting the season as it unfolds. Rather than receiving the same produce every week, you'll enjoy a changing selection of fresh vegetables harvested at their peak and shaped by what is growing abundantly in the garden.

Every box purchased helps make healthy local food more accessible in our community. Through the Community Care Box program, an equal amount of fresh, locally grown produce is distributed to those who need it most.

The first harvest is just around the corner, and we look forward to sharing the season's abundance with you. Details and registration online at https://ignatiusguelph.ca/product/community-care-box/

Help support pollinators and biodiversity at Ignatius Jesuit Centre this season!

This June, we're hosting two hands-on volunteer mornings in our pollinator garden, where participants will help care for and improve habitat for bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators. Activities will include seasonal garden maintenance, native planting, mulching, and pollinator monitoring.

Whether you're an experienced gardener or simply interested in supporting local ecosystems, these events are a great opportunity to learn, connect with others, and contribute to meaningful conservation work in our community. All experience levels are welcome.

June 9 - Spring Clean-Up & Pollinator Inventory
June 16 - Planting, Mulching & Garden Care
Both events run 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

We are very grateful to Pollination Guelph for supporting this project through their Community Grant Program.

There are still a few spots remaining for the first session of the Three Sisters Garden program at Ignatius Farm!

Join us as we begin the season by planting corn, beans, and squash together and exploring the relationships between land, food, culture, and community through this traditional growing practice. Guided by Indigenous, Catholic, and ecological farming perspectives, the program combines hands-on learning, shared reflection, and time on the land.

Families are welcome and a family registration rate is available. Participants are also welcome to join throughout the season, with registration prorated based on the remaining sessions.

Whether you are an experienced gardener or completely new to growing food, all are welcome. Register soon to join the first gathering of the season. https://ignatiusguelph.ca/product/three-sisters/

Curious about small-scale farming, land access, or regenerative growing models?

Join us on June 6 from 10am-12pm for a walking tour of Ignatius Farm’s Small Plot Agriculture Program in partnership with Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario - EFAO . We’ll explore 3 acres of community gardens, visit the community orchard, and hear directly from small plot tenants about how they’ve built viable land-based projects on a small scale.

The tour includes visits with:
• Origin Native Plants – native plant propagation and ecological restoration
• Piccolo Farm Organics – regenerative vegetable production and culturally rooted food growing
• Marnie Mee McCourty – willow growing for basketry, casket weaving, and green burial practices

This is a chance to see different approaches to small-scale agriculture, ask questions, and learn more about pathways into farming and land stewardship.

Participants are also invited to stay for afternoon workshops:
• Building Biodiverse Growing Systems with Eramosa Herbals
• Soil Health in the Orchard with Matt Soltys of The Urban Orchardist and Meaghan Mechler

Bring a picnic lunch, dress for the weather, and plan to spend the day on the land.

Register through the EFAO website at https://efao.ca/event/ignatius-small-plot-2026/

What happens when a species reshapes an entire landscape simply by doing what it naturally does?

Join Nature Guelph this Saturday May 23rd at 7pm for an evening walk along Marden Creek at Ignatius Jesuit Centre to explore the surprising ecological role of beavers and the landscapes they help create!

Far from being just tree cutters or flooded-trail troublemakers, beavers are one of the few animals capable of engineering entire ecosystems. Their dams slow and store water, reduce erosion, rebuild wetlands, recharge groundwater, and create habitat for fish, birds, amphibians, insects, and countless other species. In a time of increasing drought, flooding, and biodiversity loss, many ecologists are now looking at beavers as key allies in climate resilience and watershed restoration.

The walk will be guided by Julianna van Adrichem, whose work focuses on freshwater ecosystems, restoration, and community-based stewardship.

This will be a relaxed evening of walking, observation, and conversation for anyone curious about local ecology, waterways, and the hidden systems shaping the landscape around us. Details and registration are online at https://ignatiusguelph.ca/events/beaver-walk/
