This is how Fridays look at SYC ⛵🔥

A few boats on the water, a casual race around the lake, and a BBQ by the shoreline after.

That’s Friday Sail & Sizzle — a weekly tradition for our members.

Some keep score, some just enjoy the sail, but most stick around for the food and the people.

No boat? No problem. Crews are always looking for an extra members to lend a hand onboard.

Ramsey Lake - did you know?
✅ One of the largest lakes entirely within a single city, not just in Canada, but globally
✅ Its original Anishinaabe name, “Bitimagamasing,” means “water beside the hill”
✅ The west end was once marshy and full of fish spawning habitat, quite different from today’s shoreline
✅ Mining once left the lake severely acidified, stripping the landscape and collapsing fish populations, but decades of regreening brought it back
✅ Blueberry Island had a kids camp operating into the early 70s, something many locals have long forgotten
✅ It has no major river feeding it, most of its water comes from small creeks and groundwater
✅ Before the airport, Bell Park shoreline was home to a seaplane base, where floatplanes landed on the lake
✅Science North & Dynamic Earth sits on shoreline that was once heavily impacted by mining and later restored
✅ Generations have learned to sail here, with shifting winds making it a surprisingly technical lake

⛵ Summer Sailing School is Filling Up Fast

Looking for a day camp that’s a little different this summer?

The Sudbury Yacht Club’s Sailing School runs Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm, giving kids a full week on Ramsey Lake to build confidence, learn real skills, and spend their days outdoors on the water.

Open to ages 7–16, the program is led by Ontario Sailing Association (OSA) certified instructors and follows the CanSail 1–4 progression, with opportunities to move into our racing program for those who want to take it further. Whether it’s their first time in a boat or they’ve sailed before, we meet them where they’re at.

We also offer adult sailing lessons in the evenings, for anyone looking to get out on the water themselves.

We’re already about 75% full, and spots are going quickly as summer approaches.

If you’ve been thinking about it, now’s the time to grab a spot.
