A game-changing innovation in hydropower could make it possible to generate and store clean energy on ordinary hills – not just mountains or dams. Engineers in southwest England are testing a new approach that replaces water with a dense, mineral-rich liquid.

As energy security concerns grow alongside volatile oil prices, a game-changing innovation in hydropower could make it possible to generate and store clean e...

Feds spending $8M over 2 years, to attack environmental charities and gut environmental review processes, to silence Canadians of all sectors and many backgrounds who participate in decision-making about large-scale industrial developments.

In a notice of application filed with the court, the First Nation argues Ontario’s regulatory framework fails to properly consult Indigenous communities about dam operations and does not provide sufficient oversight of dam safety — leaving AAN vulnerable to risks such as the 2023 breach at the Twin Falls Generating Station.

A court hearing is scheduled for July 16 and 17

Two years ago crews punched holes in three dams on the Klamath River in northern California and southern Oregon. Waters held back for decades rushed free. It wasn’t pretty: For weeks, a river of chocolate milk cut through a raw, monotone landscape of glistening, sticky mud.

Conservation crews have helped plant and seed thousands of native trees and other vegetation. Salmon have responded in kind.

Ontario's regulatory approach to air pollution is also "founded on a fundamental flaw" in that it considers contaminants on a facility-by-facility basis and not the overall build up communities are exposed to over time, the report says. The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) did not respond to CBC Hamilton's questions before publication.

The cumulative effects policy is supposed to limit the amount of harmful carcinogens emitted by industry in the Hamilton and Sarnia areas. But it's not working, say environmental advocates.

In 2024, 542 barriers were removed in 23 countries, a jump of 11% compared to the previous year, which restored the free flow to more than 2,900 kilometres of rivers and rekindled a continent-wide environmental movement.

In Europe, dam dismantling reached a new level in 2024: 542 barriers were removed in 23 countries, an 11% jump compared to the previous year, restoring free flow to more than 2.900 kilometers of rivers and reigniting a continent-wide environmental movement. Old dams and reservoirs, many of them obso...

Check out what's happening at ECCC. Doesn't it remind you of Harper's war on science? At a time when climate change and its effects demand action, science is crucial!

Scientists and labour leaders are warning that cuts to Environment and Climate Change Canada could significantly impact the health and safety of Canadians as well as Canada's wildlife and environment.

If SWOT helps researchers study rivers worldwide, the benefits could reach beyond academic curiosity. Better tracking of river change can improve how communities prepare for floods, erosion, and infrastructure risk.

Virginia Tech researchers show NASA’s SWOT satellite can track river change, sediment forces, and even dam failures at scale.

The Tucuruí Dam and hydroelectric power plant in Pará, Brazil. Demand for power is growing fast, but hydro plants, the oldest source of clean energy, are struggling because of droughts, floods and other extreme weather linked to climate change. Hydropower will have diminishing returns as climate change progresses — including here in Ontario.

On Brazil’s third-largest river basin, deep in the Amazon, a massive hydroelectric power plant stands as a monument to the world’s oldest source of clean energy – and the big challenges it faces.

Last week, the federal government formally designated the proposed Wesleyville project for a federal environmental impact assessment, opening the door to public consultation. Fulfilling the dream to become an "Energy Superpower" will cost ratepayers dearly.

The Ford government is moving ahead on one of the largest nuclear projects in the world in Port Hope, which has a complicated history of nuclear contamination. Local residents who have grappled with that history say they plan to fight the project.

Among the symbols of this rebirth are long-distance migratory fish, especially the... Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Both were abundant in Germany until the end of the 19th century, but barriers and industrialization drastically reduced their populations.

Germany is removing more than 120 small dams, reconnecting hundreds of kilometers of rivers, and betting on the return of salmon and eels after a century of disruption.
