🌱 Rooted in Who We Are 🌱

Last week, our founder, Mel Siggelkow, spent some time with our team sharing, teaching, and leading a training session on the core values of who we are as Rising Above.

For our staff who have been part of the team for a while, it was a meaningful opportunity to refresh and revisit the foundation we were built on. For those who are newer to the team, it was a great opportunity to learn more about our history, our heart, and the values that guide us.

These conversations are so important because they help keep us rooted in our purpose, grounded in our core values, and focused on the people we serve.

As Rising Above continues to grow, we want to make sure we never lose sight of where we came from or why we do what we do. 💙

We are grateful for the opportunity to continue learning, growing, and serving together!

💜International Overdose Awareness Day💜

International Overdose Awareness Day is more than a day of remembrance for me—it is deeply personal.

On May 27, 2020, I lost my brother Adam to a co***ne overdose and fentanyl poisoning. He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father of four, and someone deeply loved. His life and his loss forever changed my life and the way I carry the work I do.

This day reminds me that behind every overdose statistic is a person with a story, a family waiting for the phone to ring, and people who love them beyond their addiction.

Having worked at Rising Above since 2012, I have always believed addiction is about so much more than substance use. Beneath addiction, there is often pain, trauma, shame, loss, and a desire to escape what feels unbearable. Losing my brother only deepened that understanding and strengthened my belief in the importance of compassion, hope, healing, and ending the stigma surrounding addiction.

International Overdose Awareness Day is a day to remember those we have lost, to stand beside those who are still fighting, and to remind families that their loved one was never just an addiction or an overdose.

They were somebody’s someone. 💜

Adam was somebody’s someone.

And so is every person who walks through the doors of Rising Above.

✨Working Recovery Together ✨

Today we celebrate the receiving of a capital investment grant from the Government of Alberta, this Grant will allow us to complete our new facility.

This grows our capacity to 55 residents. it also allows us to increase our second stage capacity to 29 beds for a total of 84 participants, but this doesn’t mean that we’re there yet. This means we have more space for ministry as such, we need to scale up our staff team for ministry in this expanded environment.

Our new building lot has received some of its finishing touches, with fresh grass and stonework completed in the parking lot! 🏡

Just as grass represents new growth, recovery is a journey of growth and transformation for our participants. It’s about putting down roots, building a strong foundation, and creating a new beginning.

🏠Getting it Done! 🏠

This past Saturday was filled with muscles, maticulous maneuvering, measuring and manpower.

The Men’s group from the Alliance church all pitched in and gotRDone.

When the wardrobes arrive a few weeks ago, the task seemed simple, get each one to their room, assemble and fasten to the wall. But when our 7-foot units sat in the foyer towering over all who entered, we knew we would need some muscle to move them into place and get them ready for residents.

It took for time, planning and so much experience to get them all just so. But it is done and ready for the next project to completion.

Call our office with your church team to see how you can serve this summer and finish off some furniture, moving and cleaning details. We would love to host your team and connect for all God has in store for ministry together.

🤝 Partnership Highlight 🤝

Our Executive Director, Adele- Marie Diffey, recently had the opportunity to welcome friends from Ontario who serve as Salvation Army Officers. Although Major Peter Kim from our local Corps was unable to join them, Adele was grateful to share the vision and mission of Rising Above and give her visitors a tour of our residences.

During the tour, they visited our pantry room—a meaningful reminder of the partnerships that help make our work possible. The Salvation Army’s food donations help supplement groceries for our participants, providing practical support as they focus on healing, growth, and building a new life.

God is so good. He brings His people together in His timing and in His ways. 💙 We love working together!
