Monday morning our team arrived to find this terrified cat hiding behind our donation bin. A fabric kennel was nearby and she had clearly escaped from it. We reviewed our security footage to find the person who dumped her and uncovered another unfortunate event - someone casually stuffing their van full of bags of bottles donations. To add insult to injury, the bottle thief took time to cover his licence plate and made a second trip to take the rest of the bottles that didn’t initially fit. 😫
We understand times are tough.
We understand everyone faces challenges, setbacks, and moments of desperation.
We understand that asking for help can be difficult.
What we don’t understand is abandoning an animal and leaving her frightened, alone and vulnerable. Just 90 minutes earlier, our cameras picked up our resident fox snooping around the facility. This poor cat came dangerously close to becoming his midnight snack.
What we don’t understand is taking donations given in good faith to help animals and the people who care for them.
Compassion for those in need is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why our rescue exists. When someone needs help, we encourage them to reach out.
But hardship and desperation cannot excuse actions that harm animals or take resources away from others who are also struggling.
Every donation supports pets and families in our community. Every animal deserves safety, care, and dignity.
We will always lead with compassion and help where we can. But compassion also means protecting the animals and resources entrusted to our care. Reports have been filed regarding both incidents.
The actions of a few people may have disappointed us, but they do not define our community.
When we reached out to our neighbours at Kaynic Construction Ltd to see if their cameras had captured anything ours didn’t, they responded with more than footage. A few hours later, they stopped by with a donation to replace the stolen bottles.
That’s the kind of community we believe in. For every act that tests our faith in people, there are others who restore it.
Thank you Kaynic, for your kindness and support. ❤️
