🪽Whooping cranes remain one of Canada’s most highly endangered species with fewer than 550 individuals and about 100 breeding pairs left in one wild, self-sustaining population – the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population.

🍁Mark Bidwell and John Conkin of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) will present work to support whooping cranes, including updates to long-term monitoring on the breeding grounds and during migration, and efforts to identify and protect key habitats.

Wetlands are some of the most ecologically important ecosystems we have and yet Alberta continues to lose them.
Alberta's Wetland Policy was adopted to address this ongoing loss, with a goal of conserving, restoring, protecting and managing wetlands to sustain their environmental, social and economic benefits. But how is that policy actually being put into practice?

That's exactly what the ELC set out to explore.

We've just released our Regulatory Evaluation of Alberta's Wetland Policy Implementation, an in-depth look at the key regulatory system requirements identified in the Wetland Policy, as well as decision-making related to wetland disturbance approvals issued under the Water Act. We also evaluated how implementation can be improved, and we've made recommendations to help move things forward.

Wetlands do so much for us, from water management to wildlife habitat to flood mitigation. Understanding how well our policies protect them matters.

The Grande Prairie Plant Study Group will be meeting on February 9th for a presentation by Dr. Jessie Zgurski, a local biology instructor at Northwestern Polytechnic. Jessie completed her Master’s at the University of Alberta with a focus on understanding the evolutionary relationships among lilies, cycads, and other vascular plants. She then completed her Ph.D. studying the behavioural ecology of pikas.

She will give an overview of plant evolution through time and bring plant fossils, preserved specimens, and living examples of the major groups she will talk about!
