Making the healthy choice the easier choice

In 1986, the World Health Organization determined that health promotion starts in the places where we live, work, play, shop and lead our daily lives. The Healthy Communities Approach (HCA) was born from the idea that people's health and wellness can be improved by creating environments that support making the healthier choice the easier choice. The core values of the HCA are capacity building and empowerment of individuals, organizations and community resources. It's a community-driven approach, not a one-time project or event, that taps into the skills, strengths, local expertise and knowledge of a community to create a healthier place to live.

In 2015, 16 rural communities and 3 Indigenous communities in Alberta participated in a pilot project eventually to be named the Alberta Healthy Communities Initiative. Grande Cache responded to an open call for letters of interest in 2018 and was successful in being selected as one of the new 22 communities to implement the HCA. The Grande Cache Healthier Together action team was formed at the end of 2019 with the goal to foster and grow a healthier Grande Cache.

Part of the HCA is creating a community profile and an asset map of Grande Cache, identifying strengths and opportunities. The Healthier Together action team will take a deep dive to gain a better understanding of our community and make an informed decision on what actions to take next. Engaging the community will be key in finding the trends and opportunities. By working together we will be able to enhance and support environments that better serve the people living in Grande Cache, making the healthier choice the easier choice.
