Thanks for having us again Pinaymootang! The youth practiced tipping, T-rescues, and levelled up their skills with paddling in waves and partner turns. They showed up ready to learn and have fun on the water!

Meet Xena Spence (She/Her) Program Assistant for Waterways! "Tansi! I am Blue Sky Red Butterfly Woman from Nelson House, Manitoba, but everyone calls me Xena!

Working with Waterways in the summer of 2026 has been a great experience, teaching and learning alongside many different people.

I have worked outdoors for the majority of my life, which has helped me develop a strong focus on safety, teamwork, and creating positive experiences for others. Waterways provides so many great opportunities to connect with people, learn new skills, and enjoy time on the water.

I hope to see you paddling soon!

Joiee and Alexisse had a blast joining Rainbow Resource Centre's Camp Aurora! Camp Aurora programming aims to build capacity, resilience, and community for 2SLGBTQ+ youth, and Waterways was able to join in for some canoeing. The northern lights over the Whiteshell made the experience even more magical.

Herk & Joiee spent last week in Sayisi Dene leading a youth canoeing program. What started as cold, rainy days turned into blue skies and stunning clear water on Tadoule Lake by week's end ☀️ Masi cho for welcoming us to the community!

Meet Waterways' Program Assistant Carys Smith! "Tansi, my name is Carys Smith. I’m a Cree woman from Pimicikamak Cree Nation (Cross Lake), a mother, writer, paddler, and Bachelor of Education student. I have always loved learning and teaching, and I care deeply about using my voice for my community and our youth. Paddling has been a part of my life from a young age, and through Waterways, I’ve been able to bring my love for teaching and being on the water together. I hope to continue sharing what I know with the next generation while reminding young people of what they are capable of. Ekosani!"

Meet Waterways' Program Leader Joiee! "Aniin, boozhoo! My name is Joiee Guimond and I’m from Sagkeeng First Nation which is on Treaty 1 territory. Currently, I am studying Child and Youth Care at VIU. Working with Waterways has allowed me to combine my passion of working alongside Indigenous youth and my love for the waters and lands. It allows me to connect more deeply with others and support the building of healthier communities and relationships. I am very fortunate to be able to practice this work alongside a beautiful staff team and beautiful communities. Together we all work to create and sustain hope for our collective future by sharing and celebrating the joys of being on the land and water which I find very meaningful. Miigwetch!! "

This year's Swan Lake program was one for the books! Full of laughter, canoe tipping, and swimming, plus several rounds of imposter and mafia. We were grateful to have elder Lloyd back with us for the second year in a row.

Joiee and Kyle flew into Pauingassi last week for a week of canoe programs. Canoe tipping, rescues, rock painting, and swimming to beat the heat meant a great few days on the water! 🛶🧡

Waterways recently spent two weeks in Bloodvein First Nation. In addition to paddling, the youth enjoyed swimming, sliding down the canoe water slides and going fishing! Thank you Bloodvein, for another unforgettable summer! 🌊
