Boundary Museum and Archives

Boundary Museum and Archives Located in Grand Forks, B.C., the Boundary Museum & Archives is a not-for-profit organization Join us. It is quite a place. However this is not really accurate.

Our museum is situated in the historic Fructova School, located just to the west of Grand Forks. Our Archives operates in the lower level of Grand Forks' City Hall (originally the Post Office and Customs building). Our mandate is the collection, care, preservation and providing of access to the artifacts and archival materials of the Grand Forks, Rural Grand Forks and Christina Lake areas, includi

ng Phoenix, Cascade, Eholt, and the myriad of mining camps and communities that dotted our hillsides but have disappeared. The Boundary Museum and Archives is proud to be entrusted with the stories of our region's past - from the peoples that have first called this place home - the indigenous peoples who have been here since time immemorial, to the settlers, who landed here and shaped its cultural landscape as immigrants of diverse origins and cultures: Chinese, Doukhobors, Japanese Canadians, people from the South of the border, from Eastern Canada, as well as from across the Atlantic. We are fascinated by the agricultural, industrial, and pioneer history, and the social and cultural heritage that tied it all together and links us to these past times. We are sure you are going to find it as intriguing as we do. Oh, and we have said "our" museum and "our" archives at the outset here. These are YOUR museum and YOUR archives. We are just looking after them for you.

Come check out the virtual reality of the past! Stereoscopes, a device which shows each eye a slightly different image, play with our visions natural depth perception, making 2D images appear 3D! Invented in 1832 by Sir Charles Wheatstone, the stereoscope devices took on many forms and were used for many purposes such as "virtual tourism", education, entertainment, and even as preliminary vision testing.

Here at the Boundary Museum, we have two stereoscopes in a style created by Oliver Wendell Holmes around the mid 1800's. The wooden one, named "The Saturn Scope", dates to 1895. We would love it if you stopped by to try them for yourself!

In 1895 Charlie Sandner staked 160 acres of land at the north end of Christina Lake. It wasn't until 1902 that Charlie and his wife Mary Ann Matheson moved into a cabin built on the property, having two sons (Lincoln and Randolph) and two daughters (Helen and Francis) together. Later in the 1910s the family started the Sandner shingle mill and additionally ran a lodge for tourists. Charlie suddenly passed in 1934, though his two sons eventually bought back the mill in 1936, keeping the business under the Sandner's name. The mill was prominent for many years, notably giving many of the interned Japanese Canadians at the Alpine Inn employment during the 1940s and 50s. Lincoln and Randolph (Randy) were active in their community, volunteering and pursuing multiple additional business ventures such as a Box Factory in 1944 operated in Greenwood for 20 years, a transport business in the 1960s, as well as investments in local mines. While passionate about their work, the two brothers went into semi-retirement in the 1970s, with time to enjoy hobbies like vintage cars, prospecting, rock collection, and historical and community events.
