Sadly, there are still many friendly cats who go unfixed, even when financial assistance is offered. 😿 Why? Honestly, I'm not always sure.
Someone once told me, “But I like when my mama cat has kittens. I like raising the babies and finding good homes for them.”
On the surface, that sounds like a statement from someone with a good heart who genuinely loves kittens. ❤️ But to those of us who work in animal welfare, it represents a much bigger problem. ❌
The homes someone considers “good” most likely are not being carefully vetted. Shelters and rescues work hard to find appropriate homes for cats. They know what questions to ask and what red flags to look for. Many also have policies that allow an animal to be returned if an adoption doesn't work out.
And let's talk about mama cat. ❤️
Allowing a beloved cat to go through pregnancy, birth, nursing, and repeated litters isn't harmless just because someone enjoys raising the babies. Pregnancy and nursing place demands on her body, and complications can happen. If you truly love your cat, please don't put her through litter after litter simply because you enjoy having kittens around. She deserves a chance to live a healthy life without repeatedly reproducing. 🛑
The heartbreaking truth is that we already have more cats and kittens needing homes than we have homes and resources to care for them. Every planned or accidental litter adds more animals to a system that is already struggling to keep up. 😭
