June 1, we celebrated one of nature’s most remarkable species—the wild Atlantic salmon.
For generations, salmon have been at the heart of our rivers, communities, and culture. Here on the Exploits River, we are privileged to witness the incredible journey of these fish as they return from the North Atlantic to the waters where they were born.
International Wild Salmon Day is an opportunity to recognize the importance of conserving and protecting wild salmon and the habitats they depend upon. Through education, stewardship, habitat restoration, and community involvement, we can help ensure future generations will continue to experience the wonder of wild salmon.
The Salmonid Interpretation Centre is proud to share the story of Atlantic salmon and the ongoing efforts to protect this iconic species.
Together, let's celebrate, learn, and work to safeguard wild salmon and healthy rivers for years to come.

Originally developed by the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF), the Fish Friends Program was revived in Central Nfld by ERMA in 2019 with funding support from the Foundation for the Conservation of Atlantic Salmon (FCAS). Since its revival, ERMA has expanded it to 21 schools, spanning from Gros Morne National Park in the west to Eastport in the east. As the program’s popularity grew and its network of funding partners expanded we felt it was time to name our program so that it better reflected ERMA’s leadership and its local connection to the Exploits River salmon population. The eggs used in our program are collected from Exploits River salmon, and participating schools release the fry back into the Exploits River watershed, reinforcing the program’s regional identity and conservation impact. We are proud to announce our program as ERMA's Exploit's River Hatch and Release Program.

It was great working again with www.fenwoodcreative.ca on the design of our new program logo and poster to be displayed in the participating schools. They previously designed our new interpretive displays for the Salmonid Interpretation Centre.
