As the seasons begin to change, it’s a great time to start thinking about spring cleanup, especially steps that help reduce wildfire risk around your home!
Following FireSmart Canada guidelines is a proactive way to protect your property ahead of the warmer months:
🏡 The area closest to your home (0–1.5 metres) is the most important, as it reduces the chance of embers igniting materials right next to your home. Clear away dried leaves, pine needles, and debris from decks, stairs, and gutters. Consider using non-combustible materials like gravel or stone instead of wood mulch, and store firewood at least 10 metres away from your home.
🌳 In the surrounding area, a little maintenance can go a long way. Prune low branches to reduce fire spread, tidy up dead grass when conditions allow, and avoid storing items like lumber or patio furniture under decks. Keep grass short (under 10 centimetres), and do not burn off dead grass.
♻️ Be sure to dispose of yard waste properly using municipal collection programs or drop-off sites.
🌲 Thinning Trees
• Selectively remove evergreen trees to create at least 3 metres of horizontal space between the single or grouped tree crowns.
• Remove all branches to a height of 2 metres from the ground.
🌱 Managing Surface Fuels
• Regularly clean up accumulations of fallen branches, dry grass, and needles to eliminate potential surface fuels.
• Continue to apply these principles if your property extends beyond 30m. Work with your neighbours in overlapping zones and seek guidance of a forest professional if affected by other conditions, like steep slopes.
Taking a bit of time now can make a big difference in protecting your home and community. Visit https://firesmartcanada.ca/firesmart-at-home/ for more helpful information.

The Happy Valley Goose Bay Fire Department was a recipient of a GlobalMedic fire skid unit in conjunction with the Fire Services Division for the Province of NL. This skid unit consists of a 1000 L tank, a fire pump and hose. This will enable us to access a fire in harder to reach areas with just a pick up with this fire skid unit. The HVGB Fire Department would like to thank GlobalMedic and the Fire Services Division for the Province of NL.

Please sign this petition to speed up delivery of Canadian service medals:
https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Sign/e-7075
Here's why:
Service medals represent the formal recognition of dedication, sacrifice, and service by members of the Canadian Armed Forces, emergency services, and other eligible public servants;
The timely presentation of service medals is an important part of honouring recipients, maintaining morale, and recognizing service milestones in a meaningful and respectful manner;
Significant and ongoing delays in the processing and issuance of service medals have been reported across Canada, resulting in recipients waiting extended periods—often years—after eligibility has been met;
Such delays undermine the intent of the honours and awards system and diminish the significance of ceremonial presentations and recognition events; and
Organizations, departments, and volunteer services have raised concerns regarding a lack of transparency, insufficient communication, and limited accountability related to medal processing timelines.

There is no obligation on the part of the House of Commons or any Member of Parliament to authorize the publication of an e-petition or to present an e-petition or a paper petition to the House of Commons.
