Leila’s Legacy This page honours the memory of Leila Kuusselka a grade 5 student in Gimli who was brutally r***d and murdered in 1973.

The Kuusselka family volunteered many years of their lives to provide young people iwith safe places of acceptance and belonging.

The Sunrise Band enjoyed performing at the Minerva Hall Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. It was a wonderful event with delicious sandwiches and dainties prepared by the Minerva Ladies.

People are still welcome to come rehearse at Valhalla Studio in Siglavik.

Leila my sister who was brutally murdered at 10 years of age was a wonderful drummer when we had a family band. Now my dream is to get back into music after years of absence. Recently we formed a band called Sunrise Band. Today we performed at Betel Home.
We wish to thank the local music teachers Heather and Janice for joining us and singing beautiful harmonies with us.

Today is a Heavenly Birthday of Meeri Kuusselka. She was only 46 years old when she passed away. The trauma of her daughter Leila’s tragic murder affected her emotional and physical health deeply and she never truly recovered from depression.
