A bit late, but here's the Dark n' Stormy

The 7th annual Dark N Stormy Race to Hnausa saw a fantastic turnout on July 18, with nine boats taking on a long, hot day of light and tricky winds.

In Flying Sails, Islamorada led for most of the race before Chaya made a dramatic pass in the final half-mile to take the win by less than 30 seconds. Resolute finished third.

In White Sails, Voor de Wind battled through the light air for first place, with Fidji taking second.
Once the fleet arrived in Hnausa, sailors cooled off with a swim and gathered on the pier for food, drinks and a well-earned celebration. A big thank-you to Victor and Carol for bringing the Brazilian BBQ for the hungry racers!

This video was created by Maury Lavitt, one of our amazing instructors, and he describes the love of sailing perfectly. ⛵️

Sailing is so much more than simply moving a boat across the water. It teaches us about patience, power, struggle, awareness and being completely present in the moment. The wind and the water ask for your attention — everything else has to wait.

For those of us who love sailing, it can be difficult to explain exactly why we love it so much. Somehow, Maury has captured it beautifully.

Sail Manitoba will be hosting an Optimist Clinic, giving young sailors the opportunity to develop their skills, build confidence and enjoy time on the water.

Sunday, August 9
It’s time for the Centennial Cup Regatta! Sailors are invited to take part in a fun and competitive day of racing.

Wednesday Night Racing ⛵️
These photos were taken on one of those evenings when Lake Winnipeg was as smooth as glass. The fleet looked beautiful reflected in the water, but with barely a breath of wind, there wasn’t much speed to be found!
We’re heading out again for Wednesday Night Racing tonight and hoping the lake sends us a little more breeze this time. Fair winds to everyone taking part! 🌬️⛵️

⛵ Meet Maury Lavitt! ⛵
Maury is one of our enthusiastic CANSail 1/2 instructors, returning for his second season of coaching after spending two years apprenticing with the Gimli Yacht Club sailing program.
His sailing journey began at just 10 years old with lessons at the Winnipeg Sail Centre, but it was in Gimli where he truly discovered his passion for being on the water. After six summers of sailing, Maury has achieved his CANSail 4 certification and is currently working toward CANSail 5.
Maury has also enjoyed success on the racecourse, earning 2nd place in the Optimist class at the 2024 Manitoba Summer Games and 3rd place in the ILCA 4 category at Sail West, along with competing in several local regattas.
For Maury, though, sailing is about more than racing. He loves the freedom, the challenge, and the unique feeling of being in control on the water. He believes sailing is the perfect balance of fun and learning, and he's excited to help the next generation of sailors discover that same passion.
