The Gimli Cadet Flying Training Centre (CFTC), formerly known as the Region Gliding School (Prairie) was located in Gimli Manitoba in 1984-1987, 1998 and 2000-2019, and provided Gliding and other training to cadets during the summers.
While the training was conducted in Brandon in 2022 and 2023, much of the material and equipment is retained in Gimli.
Due to the departure of the CFTC summer program many people mistakenly believe "Cadets" (all cadet activities) have left Gimli. However, Hangar 1 at the Gimli Airport continues to be a quiet hive of cadet activities throughout the year including:
The full-time, year-round AIR CADET AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE FACILITY that maintains all of Air Cadet aircraft in the Prairie Provinces and has been in Gimli since the Spring of 1998.
The GIMLI CADET FLYING SITE (CFS) that has since Fall of 1983, provided glider familiarization flights to Air Cadets from units located in Eastern Manitoba during Spring and Fall weekends.
The GIMLI CADET NAUTICAL SITE (CNS) which provides sail training to Sea Cadets units from Manitoba, also during weekends in the Spring and Fall. Although located in the Gimli area since the late 1970s, the CNS has been housed at the Hangar since the Fall of 1998.
182 GM STEFNUFASTUR ROYAL CANADIAN AIR CADET SQUADRON. Relatively the new guy on the block, the Squadron has been located in the Hangar since 2010 but has been in the Gimli area since 1983. The Squadron is one of over 400 air cadet units across Canada that provides training to cadets weekly throughout the school year.
