Doug Martienson, our incoming Rotary president, shared his vision for the coming year, emphasizing community pride, hands-on service, and stronger collaboration.

Drawing on examples of local projects such as restoring gazebos and railings, he highlighted the importance of visible volunteer efforts that improve the community.

Doug connected his vision to Rotary International’s four strategic priorities: enhancing participant engagement, increasing impact, expanding reach, and improving adaptability.

From his professional background in strategic planning and organizational change, he noted that successful organizations depend more on culture than formal plans, citing the principle that “culture eats strategy for breakfast.” He praised the club’s strong culture and expressed a desire to preserve and strengthen it.

He shared experiences from his career, including working with an immigrant business partner from China and Taiwan, returning to university to study labour-management collaboration, and developing expertise in helping large groups work together to solve complex problems.

He believes Rotary’s commitment to “Service Above Self” is increasingly uncommon and represents an opportunity for Rotary to play a larger role in society.

Doug’s key proposal is to bring together the four Sunshine Coast Rotary clubs, Interact members, Rotary family members, and other community-minded residents to explore a single question: “How can we multiply the impact of Rotary on the Sunshine Coast?”

To facilitate this conversation, he proposes using Open Space Technology, a collaborative meeting format in which participants create the agenda, join discussions that interest them, and move freely among groups. He believes this approach can increase engagement, encourage innovation, and strengthen Rotary’s impact.

Doug concluded by suggesting that the Sunshine Coast possesses tremendous untapped volunteer talent and that greater collaboration could help address important community challenges while enabling Rotary to make an even greater difference.

Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society (SCAHS) Update
Kim Darwin, President of the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society (SCAHS), spoke about the housing affordability challenges facing the Sunshine Coast and the society’s efforts to provide stable rental housing.
Founded in 2016 by community volunteers, SCAHS develops mixed-income rental housing for workers, seniors, families, and others struggling to find affordable accommodation. Its model combines market-rate and below-market units within the same buildings, creating inclusive communities. Research indicates the Sunshine Coast still needs about 900 additional affordable housing units.
Completed projects include the three-unit Franklin Road pilot, the 40-unit Shaw Place apartment building, and the recently completed 33-unit O’Shea Place development. SCAHS is also supporting plans for a future Lighthouse Avenue project that will include housing and a childcare centre.
The childcare facility will provide spaces for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and after-school care. Operated by a non-profit organization at cost-recovery rent, it is intended to help keep childcare affordable for local families.
SCAHS funds its developments through government support, mortgages, and rental income. The organization currently manages approximately $18.5 million in mortgages. As operations have grown, SCAHS has launched its “1000 Strong” campaign to recruit monthly donors and provide sustainable funding for staff and future projects.
Kim shared the story of a 75-year-old tenant who, after years of unstable housing, described moving into an SCAHS apartment as “winning the lottery,” illustrating the impact of secure housing.
Rents range from about $945 for some one-bedroom units to $2,350 for larger three-bedroom units. Approximately 40% of units are below market rates and 60% are market rates. Some units are reserved for women fleeing domestic violence.
The overall message was that community-led, mixed-income housing can help address the Sunshine Coast’s housing shortage while strengthening the local community.

The Interact Club of Elphinstone Secondary School has a run organized on Sunday May 17th. It is intended to be a fundraiser through donations made at the registration.

The Interactors were hoping to have this called a chicken run but they need a chicken suit.

Any locals have one they could lend to these high school students?

Long time member, Greg Grant, celebrates a birthday today. Greg has been instrumental in many of our projects over the years and has donated to lots of our projects. He is a great sounding board for our Soames project based on his experiences.

Many of us will see you at tonight's meeting.

Happy birthday, Greg!
