COVER THE COAST: Alliance for Affordable Housing aims to build a more connected, strategically aligned, and supported affordable housing community on the Sunshine Coast. COVER THE COAST is a Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society initiative that will build on the efforts of local housing providers, community organizations, local government, and private sector developers to provide safe, affordable, and appropriate housing that meets the diverse and changing needs of the southern Sunshine Coast. The team is working with local organizations and government to implement a Housing Action Plan that will build capacity in the community housing sector, foster partnerships between government and housing providers, advocate to all levels of government for funding and policies that promote the development of community housing across the spectrum (workforce housing, affordable housing, supportive housing, emergency housing), and nurture the development of an educated and engaged community. The work will be informed by the Sunshine Coast Housing Needs Report – Implementation Framework that was published in 2020 and the Poverty Reduction Strategy Report published in 2021.

We appreciate the candidates taking the time to learn about these challenges and the collaborative work happening across the Coast. Understanding our housing needs is an important step toward informed decisions and practical solutions.

Join us! We are seeking a community-minded contractor to lead two seniors’ housing and well-being initiatives. The first is the Kitchen Table Collective, a resident-led program that helps older adults build connections, access community resources and supports, and age in place. The contractor will work with residents in two participating Sunshine Coast communities to establish local seniors’ hubs based on the naturally occurring retirement community (NORC) model (https://norcinnovationcentre.ca/). Secondly, the contractor will support targeted outreach and partnership development for a housing initiative serving seniors living on low incomes.

This practical community development role suits someone who enjoys bringing people together, building trust, and turning ideas into manageable next steps.

A reminder of the gathering in remembrance, healing, connection, and hope coming up on Monday…

📅 Monday, August 31
🕧 1-4pm
📍 Hackett Park, Sechelt

This event is in observation of International Overdose Awareness Day, in memory of friends and loved ones gone too soon.

This community gathering offers a welcoming space to honour loved ones who have died, support those who continue to grieve, and stand in solidarity with individuals, families, and communities impacted by the toxic drug crisis.

There will be many healing activities for everyone to join in on.

The event will also feature food, music, and personal stories from survivors and families, creating opportunities for reflection, community connection, and shared understanding.

Together, we can reduce stigma, foster compassion, and remind one another that no one has to carry grief alone.

Hosted on the stolen ancestral territory of the shishalh Nation in the village of ch'atlich known colonially as Sechelt.

Always remembered ❤️💜

CONGRATS 👏 🏘️ New affordable housing complex opens in Gibsons on Sunshine Coast BC Canada 🇨🇦 Sandra Thomas, Coast Reporter.

Phase 2 of O'Shea Place includes a 45 space child care.

The Gibsons development, which includes 33 units, was delivered through BC Builds, and includes a 43-space, child-care facility — 25 spaces for children between three and five and 18 for school-age care.

The centre received more than $2.8 million through ChildCareBC’s New Spaces funding, which is supported by provincial and federal investments under the Canada-British Columbia-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.

O’Shea Place is the second phase of the housing complex, home to middle-income earners, including health-care workers, tradespeople, first responders, seniors and early-childhood educators, operated by the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society. https://www.affordablesc.org/

Thank you to everyone who attended the Aging in Place Forums in Gibsons and Sechelt. Both venues were filled to capacity, reflecting the strong interest and commitment our community has to supporting older adults.

We were honoured to welcome Office of the Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt and to join a panel of local experts from Sunshine Coast Resource Centre, Pender Harbour Health Centre, sharing research, programs, and initiatives that support seniors aging in place.

While we know there is a critical need for long-term care and other supportive housing options, one of the strongest messages we heard through the Sunshine Coast Seniors Housing Needs Assessment was that seniors want choices.

- to remain independent as long as possible.
- to downsize and access more suitable and affordable housing.
- to receive affordable support at home.
- to stay connected to their community and their loved ones.

Supporting aging in place is about much more than housing. It requires a continuum of supports, including health care, transportation, caregiving, social connection, and housing options that allow people to remain independent and engaged in the communities they love.

Thank you to Dan Levitt, the Sunshine Coast Resource Centre, CFUW Sunshine Coast, and everyone who helped make these conversations possible.

🏡 Introducing Homegrown Housing!

We're excited to launch Homegrown Housing, a new initiative aimed at creating practical, small-scale housing solutions.

Homegrown Housing will draw on the expertise of planners, builders, designers, technical specialists, housing practitioners, and community organizations to develop an open-access playbook for creating housing solutions that work for rural communities like the Sunshine Coast.

The project will explore solutions such as:

✔️ Accessibility retrofits to existing homes
✔️ Secondary suites, caregiver suites, and garden suites
✔️ Shared living arrangements
✔️ Small-scale cluster housing

These types of "homegrown" solutions can help seniors age in place, support young families, provide housing for people in the workforce, and create more options for residents at every stage of life.

We're also looking for potential pilot projects and community partners who are interested in collaborating. If you have a property, project idea, or would like to learn more, we'd love to hear from you.

This project is a partnership between Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society and Happy Cities.
