Amma Canada

Amma Canada Amma Canada is a registered charitable organization since 2003. Amma Canada is a registered charity in Canada. She established an Ashram in India in 1981.

Together with its volunteers, it serves the Greater Toronto area, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver and Victoria. Our charitable registration number is 896726908RR0001. The inspiration behind Amma Canada, Amma is well known for her humanitarian works by world organizations such as the United Nations. Born as Sudhamani, on September 27th, 1953 in a tiny fishing village in Kerala in India, Amma spent much

of her life tending to the poor. Her Sanskrit name is ‘Mata Amritanandamayi’ which means Mother of immortal bliss. To millions around the world she is known as “Amma”(Mother). The Western press has nicknamed her as the ‘Hugging Saint’ because of her famous hug-blessings. Also known as the ‘Mother of compassion’, she attracts crowds, that get larger year after year. Every year Amma visits Japan, USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, Mauritius, Reunion Islands, and various parts of India. Amma has been visiting Canada every summer since 2004. She has addressed the general assembly of the United Nations on special occasions such as the millennium summit (2000) and the conference for women in Geneva (2002). In 2002 she was presented the prestigious Gandhi-King award for Non-violence at the United Nations assembly hall (Palais des Nations) in Geneva in recognition of her lifelong work in furtherance of the principles of non violence. The previous recipients of this award are Kofi Annan, Nelson Mandela, and Jane Goodall. Amma has also been the recipient of the annual award by the Interfaith Center of New York in 2006. Amma Canada, formerly known as Amma Foundation of Canada, was registered as a charitable organization in 2003. Prior to incorporation as a charity, volunteers from the Greater Toronto area used to collect clothing, non perishable food items and household appliances and donate them to established charities such as Covenant House, Jean Tweed Centre, St.Felix Centre, Interim Place, Red Door Shelter, etc. Similarly, funds raised through garage sales were donated to these charities. In addition, volunteers used to participate in soup kitchens at St.Felix Centre, Salvation Army and Scott Mission. In May 2008, the purchase of a property located at 9158 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown, Ontario, in the Halton Hills area led to an increase in the scope of the activities. A soup kitchen was started – a hot meal has been prepared once a month since June 2009 at the certified kitchen on the premises and distributed to the clients of Georgetown Bread Basket. From mid 2016, the frequency of soup kitchens at GBB was increased to twice a month. The association with St.Felix Centre continues. In May 2009 the children at risk from the Centre were taken on a full day picnic to the Niagara Falls area and in each of the following years, the children have been taken to the Lions Safari Park, Canadian Heritage Park in Milton, Toronto Zoo, the Confederation park in Hamilton, Legoland and other locations. Starting November 2016, Amma Canada volunteers have been participating in the Extreme Cold Weather Drop in program for the homeless at St.Felix. In 2012 Amma Canada worked with Peel Children’s Aid Foundation (PCAF) and donated a bursary to help a disadvantaged youth take up a course at the University of York. In each year after that, Amma Canada has been awarding more bursaries , the number being decided through discussions with PCAF. Again, in 2015 Amma Canada signed a five-year contract with a registered Canadian charitable organization known as Fondation QHASUQ to award bursaries to six women students enrolled in computer-engineering and related programs at ISTEAH in Haiti. For the last few years, Amma Canada has been filling Christmas baskets with gifts requested by families in need, and distributing them through registered charities such as PCAF, Bennett Health Care Centre, Links 2 Care and others. Volunteers in Vancouver have been distributing similar baskets and in Quebec the volunteers have been baking cookies and collecting warm stockings for the homeless. The property at 9158 Trafalgar Road (Georgetown) consists of fourteen acres of cultivated land which used to be leased out to a local farmer. Since 2008 no chemical fertilizers or pesticides have been applied to the soil. Instead, a cover crop has been applied so that in the course of the years all the chemicals would be used up. At one corner of the land, a vegetable garden has been started, over half an acre, again without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The vegetables are donated to local charities. In 2010, the volunteers started a fruit orchard with over three hundred fruit trees such as apples, pears, cherries and peaches. As in the case of vegetables, the fruits are also given to local charities. In addition to working on the property, volunteers have been planting trees in the Mississauga and Scarborough areas, and adopting a park in Brampton. Also on the property, bee hives have been set up and the bees have been pollinating the neighbouring areas. From the summer of 2009 onwards, the bees have been producing an impressive quantity of honey every year. Volunteers have been involved in other activities such as teaching meditation techniques to the inmates at Maplehurst and Vanier correctional centres in Milton and in writing letters of support to the inmates at the Vanier correctional facility. The above is a brief description of the activities in the Greater Toronto area. Volunteers have been running similar projects to serve the needy and the homeless in other centres such as Montreal in Quebec and Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia. Amma Canada is looking for other opportunities to serve the needs of the less fortunate in the community. We are confident that we can expand our role in a meaningful way to address these needs. In the quiet transition from winter to spring, the maple trees at the Amma Canada have begun to share their sweetwater. 🍁✨

Our volunteers have been embracing this patient, meditative tradition—collecting over 360 litres of clear sap to produce just 9 litres of golden syrup. From tapping fourteen sugar maple trees to stoking outdoor fires for hours, every drop is a testament to the sweetness of collective effort and the gifts of Mother Nature.

In Canada, we know that waiting for the sap to run is the true start of spring, even when snow still blankets the earth. Beyond the tasty syrup, the real joy has been the time spent together outside, feeding the fires and sharing in a spirit of gratitude. 🕊️

If the sap is still running, we may have one final session this Saturday, April 4. For more information, please email us at:

Stirring Love into Every Meal

When a call came in from the asking if we could help find a home for 550 boxes of Kraft Dinner, our community immediately sprang into action. Within a short time, the shipment was collected and brought to the Amma Canada Centre, ready to be shared with those in need across the GTA. 🚚❤️

Through the dedicated efforts of our volunteers, these boxes were delivered to four vital food programs: , , Food Bank in Mississauga, and the in downtown Toronto. 🕊️

These small acts of coordination and care do more than just prevent food waste; they ensure that simple, comforting meals reach the tables of families across our city. We are so grateful to the coordinators and drivers who turned a phone call into a wave of nourishment. 🍎

In the warmth of the Amma Canada Centre kitchen, twelve happy bakers gathered to turn simple ingredients into a beautiful offering of care. 🍪✨

Filled with love and laughter, our team prepared 288 oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookies. These treats, along with 40 hand warmers, were delivered the same day as a belated Valentine’s surprise for the guests at St. Felix Centre

Through this quarterly initiative, our volunteers hope to share a glimmer of light and compassion with those supported by the St. Felix Centre 24-hour respite program in downtown Toronto. Many hands truly made light work, leaving us just enough time to give the kitchen a deep cleaning—because kitchens need love too! 🕊️🌹

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who brought their spirit of service to this day.

In the quiet chill of mid-February, a simple act of kindness traveled across the GTA.
🚛❤️ Through our regular partnership with the , an Amma Canada volunteer had the opportunity to help move an abundance of nourishment to those who need it most.

One of our dedicated volunteers set out on a journey of care, delivering over 400 boxes of Kraft Dinner to the Grace United Food Bank in Scarborough. These boxes are more than just meals; they are a warm embrace for a diverse community facing the hardships of food insecurity. 🕊️

Every mile driven is a prayer in motion. It is a reminder that when we act as a bridge between abundance and need, we ensure that no one in our community feels forgotten. We are deeply grateful to our partners and to the volunteers who turn their vehicles into vessels of compassion, ensuring that this surplus becomes a gift of sustenance. 🍎

Together, we are weaving a web of care that spans from Georgetown to Scarborough, one delivery at a time.

“Where there is true love, anything is effortless.” — Amma ✨

This Valentine’s season, Our Amma Canada volunteers had a beautiful day visiting Bennett Village. We had the joy of delivering a very special gift: a batch of over 80 handmade Valentine’s cards, each one tenderly crafted by our volunteers over the past year. 💌

These weren't just cards; they were 80 individual messages of warmth, patience, and remembrance.

Combined with the healing vibrations of music therapy, our goal was to wrap our seniors in the same compassion Amma shows the world. 🎶❤️

There is a sacred magic that happens when a handwritten note, created with love over many months, finally finds its way into the hands of a senior. Music and art do not just fill a room; they bridge the distance between hearts. 🌹✨

We are so grateful to our dedicated volunteers for their year-long devotion to this project, and to the Bennett Centre for letting us share this day of melody and light with their residents. 🕊️🙌

Lost in the stillness... snow at the Amma Canada Orchard today is a perfect mirror for the peace we all carry inside❄️🍎 The way the sunshine dances on the fresh snow is pure magic - you can truly feel nature's peace in every corner today.

Amma reminds us: 'Love and peace are not things to be sought outside; they are to be discovered within ourselves.' 🤍

May the serenity of the winter landscape serve as a reminder of the quiet joy that lives in the heart. ☀️✨

Spreading Amma’s message of love and compassion across Canada! ❤️✨

This 2025 Holiday season, Amma Canada volunteers came together to support low-income families, youth, and seniors through our annual Holiday Giving program. From the GTA to BC to Québec, our community was on the ground making a difference.

Highlights of our 2025 journey:
📍 In Ontario: We visited the newly opened Hope House at St. Felix Centre - a beautiful permanent housing development for women and children. We’re so inspired by Director Brian Harris and the team’s work, and we can’t wait to share new volunteering opportunities there soon!
📍 In British Columbia & Québec: Supporting vital programs like the YWCA Metro Vancouver, Our Place Society, and Welcome Hall Mission to ensure no one was left behind this winter.

From baking cookies and crafting holiday cards to shopping for gifts and filling gift bags, our volunteers put their hearts into every effort. 🎁🍪

Last Friday, five dedicated volunteers from the bundled up against the cold and snowy conditions to help prepare 11 hives for the long winter ahead at Amma Canada Farms. ❄️🍯

Canadian winters are incredibly tough on our essential pollinators. Our mission was simple: make sure every cluster is healthy, strong, and well-nourished to survive the season. 💪
