There are so many little things about childhood that we tend to take for granted. The excitement of Halloween, picking out a costume, filling a bucket with treats, and making memories that somehow stay with us long after we’ve grown.

But not every child gets to experience those things in the same way. And that doesn’t mean they deserve them any less. 🩵

This year, we’re hosting our very first Teal Pumpkin Party at the Georges River Fire Hall, and we’re asking our little community to come together to help us make it happen.

We’re looking for neighbours, families, local businesses and anyone with a little love to give to come out, set up a table and hand out treats to children who may not otherwise get to experience a traditional Halloween.

Because these children deserve the excitement, the memories, the kindness and the inclusion just as much as every other child. They deserve to know that their community sees them, thinks of them and has made a little room just for them. 🩵

And while we’re starting small, right here in Georges River, we’re hoping this becomes something much bigger.

Maybe another community sees what we’re doing and decides to do the same next year. And maybe another the year after that. Until something that started as a few tables and a handful of people wanting to make a difference becomes a tradition in communities all over.

That’s the kind of ripple effect we’re hoping for.

But first, we need our community to help us make this very first one something special.

It doesn’t take a grand gesture to make a child feel loved and included. Sometimes it’s as simple as showing up, handing them a treat and making sure they know they belong.

Because childhood is for all of them. Every single one. 🩵🎃

🩵🎃 TEAL PUMPKIN PARTY 🎃🩵

Halloween looks a little different for every child, and that’s okay. 🩵

For some kiddos, the costumes, crowds, knocking on doors, loud noises and excitement of Halloween night can simply be too much. For others, a disability or other circumstance may mean traditional trick-or-treating just isn’t an option.

So this year, we wanted to make a little space for them, too. 🎃 ✨

On October 30th from 4–6 PM, Georges River Markets will be hosting our Teal Pumpkin Party at the Georges River Fire Hall. A quieter, more comfortable little Halloween evening created especially for children with disabilities, sensory sensitivities and other needs that may make traditional trick-or-treating difficult.

There’s no pressure here. 🩵

Costumes are completely optional. Come dressed up, come in comfy clothes, come exactly as you are. Stay for a little while or stay for the whole evening. The goal is simply to give these kiddos a chance to experience some of that Halloween magic in a way that feels good for them. 🎃✨

And this is where we need our community. 🫶

We’ll have tables set up throughout the fire hall, and community members, families, businesses and organizations are welcome to join us and hand out treats to the children. We’d love to see those tables filled with familiar faces from our community.

🎃⚡️ THE MONSTER BALL ⚡️🎃

Calling all little monsters… we’ve got something fun planned just before Halloween! 👻

The Monster Ball is taking over the Georges River Fire Hall on October 24th from 6–8 PM, and we’re bringing DJ Jason along to keep the dance floor going all night!

Come dressed in your Halloween best (or worst 😈) and be ready to dance. We’ll have a prize for the best costume, so this is your chance to really commit to it. 😂🏆

And because dancing works up an appetite, the canteen will be open with some tasty treats and a few Halloween-themed surprises throughout the night. 🍭🍿

🎃🍿 HALLOWEEN MOVIE NIGHT 🍿🎃

Georges River Markets is kicking off Halloween weekend with a night at the movies! 👻

We’re taking over the Georges River Fire Hall on October 23rd for TWO Halloween movie showings, one for the little ones and one for the bigger kids who are ready for something a little scarier. 😈

🎬 6:00–8:00 PM | Kids 12 & Under
A Halloween movie for our younger crowd!

🔪 9:00–11:00 PM | Ages 13+
Once the little ones clear out, we’re turning things up a notch with a scary movie for the older kids!

🍿 $2 admission per person

And the best part? YOU get to help pick the movies! We’ll be posting polls right here on the Georges River Markets page so everyone can vote on what we’ll be watching. Keep an eye out for those! 👀

The canteen will also be open with movie-night favourites and some Halloween-themed treats because obviously you can’t have a movie night without snacks!! 🍿🍬🎃

There was a time when the milk truck had a name on the side you recognized.
When your mother sent you to the Leblancs for eggs and they told you to bring the carton back next week.
When the beef on the table was raised by a MacNeil you saw every Sunday.
And summer meant berry buckets, dirt under your nails and salt in your hair.

Somewhere along the way, we lost a bit of that, but that’s what we’re wanting to build back.

Starting Victoria Day Weekend and running through the end of September, the Georges River Farmers Market is opening with one clear purpose:

Keep it close to the land.
Keep it close to home.

We’re looking for the growers.
The farms raising beef, pork, lamb, and poultry.
The families gathering eggs at sunrise.
The dairies producing fresh milk, cheese, and butter.
The honey harvesters and tree tappers.
The flower growers filling porch steps with colour and starting seedlings.
The early-morning bakers with flour on their sleeves.

The people whose work follows the seasons here in Cape Breton.

This market is designed to be consistent and dependable for our community. We want families to know that when they come each week, the same farms and familiar faces will be there.

Because around here, you should still be able to shake the hand that feeds you.

This is a full-season opportunity, and we’ll be finalizing our summer lineup by the end of April.

If you grow it, raise it, harvest it, or bake it locally, we’d be honoured to have you join us.

Because this is our home and this land still feeds us.
