🍞 Sometimes the simplest things become the best traditions. ❤️
About a year ago, we were chatting with Danielle Coates, Marketing Specialist at Twin Ponds Wilderness Lodge, about different programs and ideas we could bring to BGC Gander.
Danielle works with Twin Ponds, a place that has already become very special to our Club. Each summer, our camp group spends a day at the pond, followed by lunch together in the dining room — and it is always one of the children’s favourite days of the summer.
During one of our conversations, Danielle told us about something she had seen while completing her teaching practicum at Lakewood Academy in Glenwood — a program called Toasty Tuesday. Every Tuesday, the students were served toast.
We loved the idea and decided to bring Toasty Tuesday to BGC Gander.
One year later, every Tuesday our children arrive at the Club knowing exactly what is waiting for them. They line up while staff prepare slice after slice of toast, choosing butter and jam or Cheez Whiz.
Nothing fancy. Just bread, simple toppings and a few minutes together.
But over the past year, those Tuesdays have added up to thousands of slices of toast — and something that started with one simple conversation has become a tradition our children look forward to every week.
It is a wonderful reminder that children’s programs don’t always have to be big or elaborate to make an impact. Sometimes it is the simplest things — something familiar, consistent and shared together — that become the memories and traditions they carry with them.
We also love knowing that a tradition that began in one small Newfoundland community has made its way to a neighbouring community and is still going strong. ❤️
