We are delighted to recognize Dr. Hany Keryakes of Dr. Y. K. Jeon Kittiwake Health Centre as a Guardian Angel through the Central Northeast Health Foundation.

Dr. Keryakes was nominated by Donna Collins and her son, who made a donation in his honour through our Guardian Angel Program in recognition of the exceptional care, quick action, and compassion he showed their family during a frightening and life-threatening situation.

The family shared this heartfelt story about their experience:

"In 2019, my son was brought to Dr. Y. K. Jeon Hospital with abdominal pain. Upon his arrival, he was seen by Dr. Keryakes, who immediately scheduled blood work and X-rays. As soon as the results were back, he asked if we could get our son to Gander to have an emergency ultrasound, as he thought his appendix was about to rupture.

We immediately drove him to Gander, where an ultrasound technologist was waiting for us. As we were in the room getting the ultrasound done, Dr. Keryakes called my sister’s cell phone and asked to speak with me. He told me that I needed to get my son over to the Emergency Department, where a doctor was waiting, because he needed to get into surgery right away.

Thankfully, everything was done quickly, and our son was put into surgery immediately. To this day, we cannot thank Dr. Keryakes enough for his quick response and instincts in getting our son taken care of. If it wasn’t for that, he may not have been here with us today.

This man even went above and beyond for days and weeks afterward, just calling to check in and see how our son was doing. To this day, he even asks about him.

This just goes to show how compassionate this man really is and how deserving he is to be nominated as a Guardian Angel. In my family’s eyes, he truly is our Guardian Angel.

There are not enough thanks and praise that we can give him for all he has done for our family and continues to do."

Thank you, Dr. Keryakes, for your quick thinking, dedication, and compassion, and for going above and beyond to ensure your patients receive the care they need. Your commitment to your patients and their families extends well beyond the examination room, and the lasting impact you have made on the Collins family is a wonderful example of what it means to be a Guardian Angel.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Dr. Keryakes, and thank you for everything you do for the patients and families in our communities!
