A seventeen-year veteran who spent seven years as an airborne commando with one deployment.

Stephen's journey into writing began after a demanding and exhilarating expedition across the Northwest Territories by canoe, covering 400 kilometers in ten days with True Patriot Love. This experience, among many others you will read about in this book, deeply influenced his approach to life and writing.

In addition to his writing, Stephen is an accomplished instrumental guitarist, songwriter, and performer. He loves the outdoors and is passionate about military parachuting, advanced scuba diving, mountain climbing, skiing, and sailing.

Stephen’s commitment to service has extended beyond his military career. Alongside his brother, he runs Veterans House Alliance International, a charity dedicated to supporting the veteran community.

He lives in Gananoque, Ontario, where he can often be seen walking his cat, Mateo.

A Canadian Veteran who served for 8 years, the last 4 years as part of the Canadian Airborne Regiment, which included participating on Operation Deliverance in Belet Huen, Somalia as part of the Battle Group.

I was on episode #79 on The Late Night Veterans Show in the U.K. with Mike Rude...speaking about mefloquine/also known as Lariam. 🦟 ☠️ 💊. . A very controversial and toxic anti-malaria drug.

We were all given the anti-malaria drug mefloquine/also known as Lariam 🦟 ☠️ 💊!! We all assumed it was an approved and a safe drug.....but we found out much later ( in my case several years later), that mefloquine was an unlicensed drug in Canada when they ordered us to take it.

We have since found out the Canadian Government 🇨🇦 made many unethical and illegal decisions regarding mefloquine that affected our mental and physical health., in many cases horrificly and permanently in a high percentage of the soldiers.

I came late on to the screne in 2019, where I learned about mefloquine🦟 ☠️ 💊 . I participated in a PTSD and TBI comparison study at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, where they conducted MRI and MEG scans of my brain. There is very measureable permanent damage to the base of my brain and along my brain stem, where mefloquine is known to collect in and damage.

I have become passionate and recently became an advocate about sharing the truth regarding mefloquine, than many Canadian troops are not aware of, so they can become educated and informed and attempt to manage it

Former member of 1st and 3rd BN Royal Canadian Regiment, 3 Commando Canadian Airborne Regiment. Operationally deployed first Gulf War, Cyprus, Somalia and Rwanda.
Exposed to mefloquine while in Somalia and Rwanda. Immediately started suffering from mefloquine poisoning(Quinism), that resulted in court martial and release from military.
I battled for the next 14 years what i thought was PTSD, intense PTSD treatment, inpatient treatment for PTSD, anger management both voluntary and court mandated, parenting after parenting programs. All with little to no reduction in my symptoms. It wasn’t until my long time psychologist snuck me into a treatment program for afghan vets with brain injuries that i got my life back.
So started to make connection to the mefloquine/lariam we were given in Africa.
Became an advocate for those poisoned.

👤Marj Matchee
A wife of Master Corporal Clayton Matchee, the soldier most disgraced by the anti malarial drug Mefloquine/also known as Lariam.

Clayton was deployed on the first wave of the Canadian Airborne Regiment Battle Group, sent to Somalia, on Operation Deliverance in early December 1992. He and the rest of the Battle Group, became unwitting participants in an illegal drug trial using the unlicensed drug Mefloquine, which causes horrific side effects in a high percentage of the troops.

It culminated in the murder and torture of a Somalia teen, named Shidane Arone. This horrific and tragic incident became known as The Somalia Affair. I have been seeking the truth, and justice for everyone, who was given mefloquine, and it has become an all consuming journey for justice, for me.

I have been advocating against the use of Mefloquine on service members ever since, its been 33 years. I am the founder of the Annual Veterans Mefloquine Rally in Canada 🇨🇦. Alongside many other like-minded advocates, together, we have built a global movement. It is dedicated to seeking the governments acknowledgment and justice, for decades of veterans poisoned by a drug known for its horrific side effects.

I continue to push to hold the government accountable for its actions and to ensure that service personnel are not used as Guinea pigs to test drugs ever again!!

In honour of D-Day and our veterans who survived.

PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder
We hear that term so much
But how can it be serious
There is no wound to touch

There is sympathy for those
Who've lost limbs
Or who can no longer see
But how can you feel compassion
When they look the same as you and me

They hide their feelings behind a wall
A wall in time they must climb
Sounds can trigger emotions
They once thought they’d left behind

Some are drowning with guilt
Their thoughts are filled with pain
The things they’ve seen and done
They pray never to repeat again

They wake up with night sweats
They live with endless fear
Sadly they cannot talk to those
They truly love so dear

They cannot erase their memories
They spin round and round in their head
Sometimes they fight with all their strength
Other times they wish they were dead

But how can you help their torment
Or truly ever share
The atrocities beyond belief
When you were never there

One thing you can do is listen
Do not say you understand
You have not walked in their shoes
Just be a helping hand

When someone suffers from PTSD
Remember their wounds are inside
Treat them with dignity and kindness
Don’t strip them of their pride

Think of it in these terms. A freshly amputated person arrives at a clinic with a leg missing. The clinician gives them a set of crutches and some painkillers and tells them, “You’re fit to run a marathon.” To a certain extent, this is what’s happening in mental health care: Take this drug, go back to the home or work stress, and you won’t feel your emotional un-wellness any longer. Or better yet, how long does it take to grow a brain? Nine months before it can support the body on its own and then a lifetime to learn and constantly rebuild.
It takes time to repair the damage of trauma. I had to take the time to adjust and rebuild holistically, as it isn’t a speed race, it is an endurance event. So, I had to make sure I could reach the finish line. In effect, I needed to allow time for my brain to code itself and become conscious.

The film is currently in post-production and set to launch in late summer 2026, with community screenings, festival showings, and streaming releases worldwide.
