Thousand Islands Association - TIA

Thousand Islands Association - TIA TIA is a non-profit that promotes river safety, environmental awareness and community support Please consider becoming a member today.

Our flagship program is the placement of nearly 200 white and orange shoal markers in Canadian waters between Howe Island and Brockville each summer. TIA also funds the supply of markers to Save the River out of Clayton who place another 100 markers in US waters each season. Memberships start at just $50 a year!

A huge thank you to the US Coast Guard officers who recently rescued and safely returned one of our wandering shoal markers!

With this year’s high waters and recent intense wind events, things are shifting on the River. Because of these conditions, some of our shoal markers have floated away from their designated locations, while some others have not yet been able to be safely placed yet.

We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution while boating on the St. Lawrence this season. Please do not rely on shoal markers for navigation. Keep a sharp lookout, use up to date GPS/charts, watch your speed, and stay safe out there.

TIA lost and found: With the high water this year, there are a number of floating docks adrift. This floating dock with a ladder was found at the east end of Lost Channel between Reciprocity Island and Huckleberry Island, just east of the Bridge on the Canadian side. If this is yours or you think you know who the owner is, send an email to [email protected]

Wishing everyone a Happy Friday! We hope your weekend views include the river even if we can’t all have an office like Hucks Marine & Resort 😍🌊☀️

With an office view like this, staying focused can be a real shore challenge ☀️🌊 https://bit.ly/4eaSVJ6

Calling All Islanders!
We are looking for 10 members willing to share their river experiences, docks, dens or decks with the TIA family on August 8th, 2026 for a one day, 10am to 2pm event.

This is not a home and garden tour or fancy tea and scone event, think of it more as a “progressive dock party”. It is a chance to meet those islanders you’ve been politely waving to for the last 30 years. An opportunity to take a closer look at that boathouse you’ve always admired. Maybe a stroll through a riverfront garden, or a chance to safely navigate a new part of the river. Simply, it’s a fun chance to meet your island neighbours while supporting the TIA.

The DD&D Tour has remained a constant conversation piece among the TIA members since it was introduced in 2018.

From the surveys of previous DD&D Tours, we learned the following:
100% of the Island Patriots that shared their docks said they would do it again and recommend the opportunity to other members in the future.
100% of those who purchased a DD&D pass said they would join in the fun again.

So, do you have what it takes to be an Island Patriot?
Do you have river stories and don’t mind sharing?
Are you keeping a rich part of river history that deserves to be shared?
Do you enjoy spending time with old friends and meeting new friends?
Are you willing to be known as a safe harbor to your river neighbours?
If the answer is yes to any of the selection criteria, we ask you to join the Patriot family. It’s simple, fun and a great opportunity to support the fun raising efforts of the TIA.

If you are willing to be an Island Patriot, reach out to Dan McWilliam by email at: [email protected] or the TIA.

Pictured here is Chief Mike Prior (Leeds 1000 Islands Fire Services) accepting a cheque for $8000 from Jim Côté (Chair, River Safety), donated by TIA for upfitting the Township’s Marine Units with improved lighting, sirens, and hard piping for easy priming.

The cheque was presented to the Chief on the new Fire Rescue Boat Marine 3 docked at Brennan Marine on the Gananoque River. The Chief was accompanied by Fire Prevention Officer Doug Richardson (photographer) and Station Captain Peter Evans.
