Life on Gabriola TV visits with visual artist Rhonda Weppler, during her recent stay on the island as the Kasahara Gabriola Trust Artist-in-Residence.

While here, Rhonda lived in the waterfront home built by arts-lover Toshiko Kasahara before her death in 2019. She used the residency to work on an ASMR video ("a kind of a meditative, slow type of video") that "slowly travels through the landscape, but it has these little, surreal moments in this landscape."

Rhonda also offered a public "Beads and Bakes" workshop where participants made beadwork flower pins, and a final presentation of her video that included a drop-in holiday card-making session. The residency is a joint program of the Gabriola Arts Council and The Kasahara Gabriola Trust.

According to the GAC website, Weppler's work embraces a range of materials and methods, focused on "how humans attempt to understand and preserve the natural world by recreating it—sometimes realistically, sometimes abstractly." She also tells host Lisa Webster about her interest in "things that you don't look at normally or don't think about that often," her work in large scale sculpture as well, and the "so sweet and so warm" people of Gabriola.

An excerpt from Rhonda's video is included in this episode. To watch all of it, visit https://vimeo.com/1155745509/5db662e161?share=copy&fl=sv&fe=ci/.

Life on Gabriola TV's Lisa Webster interviews author Monique Gray Smith, during her recent stay on Gabriola Island as part of the Kasahara Gabriola Trust Artist Residency program.

As Artist-in-Residence, Monique lived in the waterfront home built by arts-lover Toshiko Kasahara before her death in 2019. In addition to working on her latest novel, Monique gave a writing workshop as well as a public reading, both of which are also featured in the video.

Monique’s books cover a broad spectrum of ages, topics, and emotions. Woven into all of her writing, speaking engagements, and online courses is the teaching that Love is Medicine. She discusses that theme with Lisa, as well as the novel she's working on, her writing process, and the joys of her time on Gabriola.

The Kasahara Gabriola Trust Artist Residency is a joint program of the Gabriola Arts Council and the Kasahara Gabriola Trust. To learn more about it, and Toshiko Kasahara, visit artsgabriola.ca.
