Today, our Legion was honoured to participate in the trail dedication ceremony for Comrade Private Albert Welch. We were thrilled to be invited to such a meaningful event that celebrated the life and service of one of our local heroes.

Comrade President Amanda was invited to share the story of Private Welch from her new book, bringing his history and sacrifice to life for everyone in attendance. It was wonderful to see several of our members join the approximately 80 people who gathered for the dedication.

We were especially touched to receive a wonderful gift for our Veterans Room—a photograph of a young Private Welch, generously donated by his granddaughter. It will be a treasured addition to our collection and a lasting reminder of his service.

The trail itself is absolutely beautiful, and we encourage everyone to take the time to walk it and learn more about Private Welch’s story while enjoying the natural beauty of Brier Island.

Congratulations and well done to the Brier Island Trail Committee for creating such a fitting tribute. Your hard work has given our community a place to remember, reflect, and appreciate the sacrifices of those who served.

If you would like a copy of the book with Private Welch’s story, please message our page or contact Amanda. We still have a few copies available!

On May 19, 1855, the foundation of what would become the Canadian Army was established with the creation of the Permanent Active Militia—marking the beginning of a proud military tradition in Canada.

From these early roots, the Canadian Army grew into a disciplined and respected force, answering the call in times of need at home and abroad. From the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars, to Korea, Afghanistan, and peacekeeping missions around the world, Canadian soldiers have served with courage, professionalism, and dedication.

For many communities across our country, including our own, that history is deeply personal. Generations have stepped forward to serve, carrying on a legacy of duty and sacrifice.

Today, we honour all those who have served in the Canadian Army, past and present, and we recognize the enduring legacy that began in 1855.

Lest we forget.

Today we mark Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), May 8, 1945—the day the Second World War came to an end in Europe.

After years of sacrifice, hardship, and loss, the guns finally fell silent across the continent. For Canadians, it was a moment of both celebration and reflection. Thousands had served far from home—in the skies, on the seas, and on the battlefields of Europe—and many would never return.

From the beaches of Normandy to the liberation of the Netherlands, Canada’s contribution helped bring about the defeat of tyranny and the restoration of peace.

On this day, we remember the courage and determination of all who served, and we honour those who gave their lives so that others might live in freedom.

Lest we forget.

Today we remember the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945, a powerful chapter in the story of courage, sacrifice, and hope at the end of the Second World War.

Canadian soldiers played a leading role in freeing the Dutch people from years of occupation, fighting through difficult conditions to bring peace and relief to a nation in need. From the Battle of the Scheldt to the final advances in the spring of 1945, their determination helped open vital supply routes and restore freedom.

The bond formed between Canada and the Netherlands during those months remains strong to this day—a lasting symbol of gratitude and friendship. Each year, the gift of tulips reminds us of the lives saved and the sacrifices made.

We remember the bravery of those who served, including the many who never returned home, and we honour the legacy they left behind.

Today we remember the founding of the Royal Canadian Navy on May 4, 1910, a defining moment in Canada’s journey as a nation.

With the passing of the Naval Service Act, Canada took its first steps toward establishing its own naval force—one that would grow from modest beginnings into a proud and vital part of our country’s military.

From those early days, the Royal Canadian Navy has played a crucial role in defending our shores, supporting our allies, and serving in conflicts around the world—from the First and Second World Wars to modern peacekeeping and international operations.

For coastal communities like ours, the Navy’s story is especially meaningful. Many local families have answered the call to serve at sea, continuing a tradition of courage, dedication, and sacrifice.

Today, we honour all those who have worn the uniform of the Royal Canadian Navy, past and present, and we recognize the legacy that began in 1910 and continues to this day.
