June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada.

This month, we honour the histories, cultures, contributions, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

At the Multicultural Association of Fredericton Inc (MCAF), we express our gratitude to the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) People, the custodians of the land where our organization is located, and we remain committed to ongoing learning and reconciliation.

We encourage everyone to take time this month to learn, listen, and reflect as we continue this journey together.

Celebrating Filipino Heritage Month and the 128th Independence Day
As we enter June, we have the exciting opportunity to celebrate Filipino Heritage Month alongside the 128th Philippine Independence Day on June 12. This month is significant not only for honoring the rich culture and contributions of the Filipino community but also for reflecting on the enduring spirit of independence and resilience. During this time, we can delve into the history, traditions, and values that shape the Filipino identity, allowing us to broaden our perspectives and strengthen our communal ties.

Here are a few important points to consider during this celebration:

- Cultural Significance: Filipino Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the diverse cultures that enrich our society. It is an excellent time to learn more about Filipino traditions, arts, and achievements. From the colorful festivals like Sinulog and Pahiyas to the beautiful craftsmanship seen in intricate handwoven textiles, there is so much to explore. Engaging with Filipino cuisine, known for its unique flavors and regional diversity, can also be a delightful way to appreciate this heritage.

- Historical Importance: The 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence invites us to acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices made for freedom and the ongoing journey towards building a more inclusive and equitable community. The stories of heroes like José Rizal and Andres Bonifacio remind us of the power of resilience and the importance of standing up for justice and equality. Reflecting on these stories can inspire us to advocate for positive change in our own communities.

- Engagement Opportunities: We encourage everyone to participate in local events, educational activities, and discussions that highlight Filipino heritage. Whether it’s attending cultural exhibits, watching films that portray Filipino stories, or joining workshops to learn traditional dances, there are plenty of ways to engage and connect. Sharing personal experiences and stories can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation among colleagues, strengthening our bond as a diverse team.

Let us take this time to honor the Filipino community and embrace the values of unity, diversity, and respect. Together, we can celebrate the vibrancy and resilience of Filipino culture, creating an atmosphere of inclusivity that honors all backgrounds and experiences.
