🪵Tomorrow, Saturday! Carve your mark on history: Step into the Early Modern Period!

"Did you know that woodblock crafts are deeply tied to the preservation of global literary history?"

China's oldest surviving private library is the Tianyi Pavilion (Tianyi Ge) in Ningbo, Zhejiang province. Founded in 1561 during the Ming Dynasty by the imperial scholar Fan Qin, this legendary repository originally housed roughly 70,000 ancient volumes. Centuries ago, to reproduce and safeguard rare local chronicles, medical texts, and imperial examination records, scholars relied heavily on the historic technique of carving text and intricate patterns into flat woodblocks to print onto paper. Today, Tianyi Pavilion stands as a breathtaking museum safeguarding nearly 300,000 ancient volumes—including 80,000 rare texts—preserving these block-printed historical treasures for future generations.

This Saturday afternoon, you can connect with this rich heritage at our Wood Block Workshop! While historic woodblocks were traditionally inked to replicate text on paper, our workshop brings a creative, modern twist to celebrating this enduring art form.

Instead of printing on paper, you will work directly with a beautiful piece of wood carved with traditional, auspicious patterns. You will bring these historic motifs to life by painting them with a shimmering gold pigment. Once completed, your golden masterpiece can be placed directly into a picture frame to take home—giving you a stunning, personalized symbol of cultural history to display and treasure. ✨🎨

🗓️ When: Saturday, June 6 | 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
📍 Where: The Cultural Centre, 28 Saunders St, Fredericton, N.B.
🎟️ Admission: FREE

⚠️ Limited Space: No pre-registration is required for this workshop—it is first-come, first-served! It's a wonderful, relaxing hands-on craft for all skill levels to appreciate the beauty of traditional motifs.

Come explore the colours of tradition with us! 🎨✨

“As we celebrate National Indigenous History Month, we honour the rich cultures, languages and identities of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

Since I became governor general, I have seen progress and a growing commitment among Canadians through national and regional efforts toward reconciliation. This comes from acknowledging historical injustices, understanding our true history, and recognizing Indigenous knowledge and leadership in the choices we make as a country.

It has been a privilege for me to be a champion for so many important moments on Canada’s reconciliation journey: Indigenous leadership meetings with His Majesty King Charles III; artifacts repatriated from the Vatican and returned to their home communities; Elders and youth reviving Indigenous languages; and artists, innovators and leaders being honoured for their countless contributions.

This journey is not finished. There is still much work to be done. I encourage everyone to renew their commitment to learning, to understanding and to moving forward on this path with hope.” -
