With gratitude and joy, we’re sharing the completion of Nature Through Our Senses. 🌿✋

This project invited children and educators to meet nature through wonder first: through touch, listening, observation, imagination, and relationship. Along the way, it opened beautiful spaces for outdoor learning, sensory exploration, and deeper care for the living world.

Funded by Wildlife Habitat Canada , NTOS grew through workshops, field days, educator learning, and a summer pilot that showed just how powerful nature-based education can be when it begins with curiosity.

We’re closing this chapter with deep gratitude. 🌿Preserving Black Ash has shown us that conservation begins with relationship.

With support from the New Brunswick Environmental Trust Fund, this project helped build the education and stewardship foundation needed for long-term Black Ash conservation in New Brunswick. Over the course of this work, USNN developed the Rooted in Resilience youth training manual, piloted forestry learning with students, hosted a community basket-making workshop, and completed a baseline Black Ash inventory that revealed strong regeneration and promising stewardship potential.

This project reminded us that Black Ash conservation is not only about protecting a species. It is also about culture, relationship, knowledge, and responsibility. 🍃

We’re excited to share that Trails for Tomorrow has officially begun 🌲🥾!

Through guided hikes, hands-on workshops, and land-based learning opportunities, this new USNN project will help youth, families, newcomers, and communities deepen their relationship with the natural world and grow in stewardship, confidence, and care. 🌿

Funded by Wildlife Habitat Canada, Trails for Tomorrow is about more than walking a trail. It is about creating meaningful pathways for people to learn with the land, connect with local ecosystems, and take part in protecting the places that sustain us.

Big news! Our Function First: Wetland Function, Structure & Stewardship project has been approved and it's made possible through Wildlife Habitat Canada ! 🌿

We're bringing wetland education into New Brunswick high school classrooms - think hands-on field workshops, waterfowl identification, and real ecological skills students can carry for life.

As we build this program, we want to hear from educators and youth. Your input will shape everything. Take part in our survey here 👉 https://usnn.ca/projects/function-first-wetlands/

🧺 Weaving Tradition Across Generations

Did you know that NBICC was originally founded as UNBITI — the Union of New Brunswick Indians Training Institute? For many years, UNBITI provided opportunities for Indigenous learners to gain education, skills, and cultural knowledge within a supportive community environment.

One of the traditions shared through these gatherings was the art of Black Ash basket making, an important practice among Wabanaki peoples that connects culture, land, and community.

Today, NBICC proudly continues this legacy. Recently, our students participated in a Black Ash basket making workshop led by knowledge keeper Rodney Bear in partnership with United Spirit Nature Network (USNN). Students had the opportunity to learn traditional techniques — from preparing ash splints to weaving the basket base — while gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural teachings behind the craft.

Moments like these remind us that education at NBICC is not only about classroom learning — it is also about honouring traditions, sharing knowledge, and keeping our cultures strong for future generations.

Woliwon to Rodney Bear and USNN for sharing their knowledge and helping us continue this important tradition.

🍁🌲 Two unforgettable October field days at Mactaquac Provincial Park (NB Parks/Parcs N.-B., Parc Mactaquac Park)

Over two incredible days, 100 students stepped into the forest as young scientists as part of our Nature Through Our Senses program.

They became tree detectives, measured canopy shade with a little “forest math,” explored fungi and microhabitats, and even wrote their own tar spot fungus song along the way.

This is what outdoor learning can look like: curiosity, discovery, and stewardship growing together in the forest.
